Bremen relies on training: More trainee for good education!

The shortage of teachers in Germany is a problem that now makes high waves - in Bremen the situation is perceived as particularly serious. A look at the numbers shows that the decline in the trainee lawyers cannot be overlooked nationwide. Bremen, on the other hand, has decided to counteract this. From February 2024, the number of legal clerkships will be increased at the State Institute for School (LIS) in order to meet the increasing demand. Currently, 680 traineeships are preparing for their apprenticeship, which means an increase in 80 compared to previous years, as the Weser-Kurier reports.

It is particularly noticeable that many of these prospective teachers have studied in other federal states, but have deliberately chosen a legal clerkship in Bremen. In recent years, an average of more teachers have started a legal clerkship in Bremen than completed his studies there. According to Silke Engelhardt, head of the training department at LIS, a coaching -like approach is used without direct grades. This promotes a relaxed learning environment - errors are not evaluated negatively, but regarded as opportunities for learning.

Bremen remains on course despite challenges

The Bremen Senate has given great importance in the coalition agreement. A comprehensive package of measures aims to improve the teaching situation. The creation of 812 new positions was decided in 2023 and 1,085 jobs in 2024, with 736 of these positions being teachers. Due to the poor results in country comparisons and the low reputation of the school qualifications, Bremen attaches particular importance to educational justice in order to offer all children the same opportunities, regardless of origin or place of residence.

A simplification of the application process has already led to records in the ceasing of legal clerks. In August 2023, 1,066 people began a legal clerkship, and between 220 and 240 new trainees are expected for August 2024. Bremen was also the only federal state that abandoned funds from the federal program "starting chances" in 2024, which supports socially disadvantaged students

measures against the shortage of teachers

Another aspect that contributes to combating the teaching shortage is the feedback from the population. A survey by the Institute for Economic Research shows clear preferences among the population: 80% support the after -qualification of teachers, 76% support the relief of old teachers through new positions, while 74% of targeted training sessions to prevent illness -related failures. The need for support is high, especially in outskirts and schools with higher social levels. In Bremerhaven the situation is even more pressing, here 126 teaching positions are vacant.

We can therefore determine: The Bremen education area is moving, even if the shortage of teachers is still a challenge. The new qualification measure for inclusion specialists and the initiative "Back to School?!" are just a few of the steps that Bremen takes to relieve this important sector and at the same time to ensure a positive learning environment. It is only to be hoped that the strategy will work and the school will get what it needs - motivated and well -trained teachers.
