Werder Bremen U23 loses to Lübeck – promotion dreams dashed!

The U23 of SV Werder Bremen suffered a painful defeat last Sunday. In the Regionalliga Nord they clearly lost 0-2 against 1. FC Phönix Lübeck. The Bremen team not only missed out on their third win in a row, but also a place in the top third of the table. Before this game, they had established a solid starting position with two wins against FSV Schöningen (2:0) and FC St. Pauli II (3:2), but the young team was unable to build on these successes in Lübeck, like Deichstube reported.

The game started off difficult for Bremen, who came under pressure early in the first half. Lübeck had the better chances, with Anton Ihde hitting the post with a shot in the 8th minute and Benjamin Atiabou clearing Kalilou Camara in the 15th minute. Werder keeper Stefan Smarkalev was able to parry a free kick from Stylianos Kokovas, but had to concede the first goal in the second half after a magnificent long-range shot from Michel Dammeier in the 58th minute. Artur Inaka also increased Lübeck's lead to 2-0 in stoppage time (90th + 4th minute), which secured the final score.

A difficult away game

After the break, Werder Bremen showed more fighting spirit, especially with a solo run by Heitmann, but the Lübeck goalkeeper Kips was able to overcome the first challenge in the second half (47th minute). Despite a powerful final spurt in the last ten minutes and a few attempts to turn the tide, the Bremen goal was denied, as Werder.de describes.

U23 coach Christian Brand spoke after the game and described the defeat as deserved. "We didn't reward ourselves for the self-sacrificing fight. Sometimes football is simply unfair," said the coach. Bremen's poor offense was cited as a factor that contributed to the defeat. The course of the game shows that the defense was challenged, but the attackers were also unable to build up enough pressure to pose any serious danger.

Outlook for the coming challenges

After this setback, SV Werder Bremen U23 is currently in tenth place in the Regionalliga Nord. What is particularly explosive is the fact that Werder played one game less than many of their competitors. The next game will take place next Sunday against HSC Hannover, and the team will be eager to show its best side again. Kick-off is at 3 p.m.

After last season, in which the U23s came to the Bremen League after an unfortunate relegation, the goal remains clear: immediate promotion back to the Regionalliga. The team has an impressive record from last season and hopes that they can build on their old successes, as NordFV reports.
