Gigantic expansion: Constructor University wants 10,000 students by 2035!
Something exciting is happening in Grohn: Constructor University has big plans that go far beyond the campus. The university wants to increase the number of students to an impressive 10,000 by 2035. There are currently around 2,100, but with a comprehensive master plan that includes more than 20 new buildings, the capacity is expected to increase to 5,000 students by 2031. Weser-Kurier reports that state approval for this project has already been available since the end of 2023, although only in one point There are conflicts with the valid development plan.
An essential part of the project are three new student residences, which are being built in partnership with the European project developer Ten Brinke. These are expected to have a total of 1,000 beds by 2026. According to information from uni-heute, two dormitories with 400 beds each are planned on Friedrich-Humbert-Straße, while another with 200 beds is to be built on the site of the Arts and Culture Center. The total investment amount for the first phase amounts to up to 100 million euros, with the aim of strengthening the scientific competitiveness of the Bremen region.
Infrastructure and sustainability
But it's not just the living space that is being increased. The plans also provide for a significant expansion of the infrastructure. Offices, laboratories and academic rooms are to be expanded on the campus. The new building will be built in accordance with modern energy standards, with solar systems and heat pumps being used. Discussions with the municipal utilities about local or district heating are underway to ensure a sustainable energy supply. Childcare options are also being improved: The kindergarten on the university campus will remain at its location until at least March 2026, but has been integrated into Kids & C>O e.V. and requires capacity for 5,000 students and 1,000 employees.
Another highlight of the master plan is the planned science park, which is intended to support start-ups and attract public funding. A hotel with 100 to 130 rooms is also planned here, with investments of between 12 and 15 million euros being targeted. Given the existing development plans that do not allow for a boarding house, the Constructor University focuses on the areas of education and research. The search for empty buildings in Blumenthal and Vegesack for additional apartments is already in full swing.
Campus development at other universities
While the Constructor University in Grohn is pushing ahead with its comprehensive plans, further developments are also in the works at the Bremen University of Applied Sciences. Extensive construction work is underway at the Neustadtswall campus, which includes, among other things, the reconstruction of the FS building after extensive pollution remediation. An extension of around 6,125 square meters is planned, which will provide the use of offices, meeting and seminar rooms. These expansions should be implemented in compliance with strict sustainability criteria in order to minimize energy consumption and reduce operating costs. The extent to which Bremen University of Applied Sciences pursues similar visions to the Constructor University is currently being monitored.
Overall, it can be seen that Bremen's university location is on the upswing, and the developments are promising for both the students and the region. The great commitment of the Constructor University will certainly contribute to making Bremen even more attractive as a university location and could soon significantly increase the number of students, opening a new chapter in Bremen's university history.
