Table football for seniors: games, fun and community in Weyhe!
An integral part of social life for many seniors in the region is the “1st Table Football Seniors Club” (TFSC) from Weyhe. This interesting club was founded in 2014 by Jürgen Herrmann. A lively group of 17 members, aged between 65 and 85, mostly comes from Weyhe and the surrounding towns of Stuhr, Bassum, Twistringen and Bremen-Hemelingen. The members are not club-bound athletes, but rather form an informal community that dedicates its heart and soul to working with seniors. Women are explicitly welcome, which reinforces the open and welcoming atmosphere that exists in the club.
The club meets regularly on the first and third Tuesday of the month in the Melchiorshausen elementary school, where the premises are provided by the municipality of Weyhe. In addition to training for table football, an important rule of the club is that topics such as politics, church and illnesses are left out. “This promotes a relaxed atmosphere,” explains Herrmann. This corresponds to the desire of many seniors to be active and sociable without being confronted with stressful topics. Regular tournaments provide additional incentive and fun. Recently, a doubles and a singles tournament took place, where the participants were able to experience not only sporting ambition but also a sense of community and fair competition.
Tournaments and achievements
At the last doubles tournament, Günther Flügger and Helmut Lassek triumphed, while Richard Bischoff and Jürgen Herrmann took second place. Manfred Goertz and Frank Schwarz took third place. At 66, Frank Schwarz is a new member who joined in June after previously being unable to attend due to work commitments. The commitment in the club shows how important regular sporting activities are for the health of seniors, which is also emphasized by the Provita website. It is recommended to do sports such as swimming, gymnastics or Nordic walking to promote physical fitness and make social contacts.
In addition, the TFSC plans to compete against other groups and has already made contact with a hobby football group from Hoyerhagen. These interactive encounters not only offer the opportunity to give your own sporting skills a boost, but also to make new friends and deepen existing relationships.
Leisure activities in old age
The activities of the table football club help to increase the quality of life of the members. A varied leisure activity is of great importance in old age as it promotes well-being and reduces social isolation. The nursing assistance website emphasizes that social interactions increase self-confidence and provide emotional support. In addition, the joy of shared experiences is invaluable for seniors.
In order not to neglect mental fitness, it is recommended to integrate activities such as crossword puzzles or memory. Registering for a senior study program or creative offerings can also provide an exciting challenge. The exchange with others, as practiced in the TFSC, is not only sporty but also spiritually enriching.
The opportunity to take easy trips or short trips offers our seniors flexibility and the chance to get to know new cultures. Computer courses are another excellent way to stay connected to modern media and bridge the digital divide. Gardening is also very popular and provides a cost-effective way to stay active.
Overall, it shows that active leisure activities are incredibly important for seniors in order to maintain joy in life, health and a sense of community. The “1st Table Football Seniors Club” from Weyhe is an excellent example of how you can use heart and mind to shape the age group in a meaningful way and never lose practice.
