Chaos on the A1: Construction site in Bremen causes long traffic jams all the way to Ippener!
A look at the current traffic situation in Bremen: Drivers on the A1 around the Weser Bridge have been getting on their nerves for weeks. Work will continue here until 2028, and there are already long backlogs that extend as far as Groß Ippener. This is not only annoying, but has also led to several serious accidents, including a fatal incident. This makes it clear that the construction site is not only a nuisance but also a serious safety issue.
But not everything is gray. Björn Buske, press spokesman for Autobahn GmbH in the northwest branch, emphasizes that there are measures in place to achieve this. On the section from Stuhr, traffic is regulated by dynamic traffic signs. These are intended to help adjust maximum speeds depending on traffic density. Mobile traffic jam warning systems were also set up to warn road users of traffic jams in good time. Drivers who are familiar with the area like to use alternative routes to escape the construction site, including the renovated B75 on the Lower Saxony side.
Traffic management and future outlook
A permanent traffic count to quantify the shift in traffic via the A28 to Delmenhorst is currently not planned. Nevertheless, the all-clear is given for the Delmenhorst motorway triangle: it is considered efficient and should be able to handle traffic well until 2035. There are currently no major renovations planned at the motorway triangle, which will at least calm the situation somewhat. However, it is known that several bridge structures are being checked and prioritized in the Oldenburg district.
A new replacement for the bridge that carries the B213 over the A1 is in the planning phase. However, all bridges in the area are currently safe and passable, so there are no acute dangers. Autobahn GmbH also has long-term plans: A six-lane expansion of the A1 between Ahlhorner Heide and Stuhr is planned, including the bridge structures. This could significantly improve the traffic situation when the time comes.
Autobahn GmbH was only founded in 2018 and has been responsible for the planning, construction, operation, traffic management, maintenance, financing and administration of motorways in Germany since 2021. This shows that there is still great potential for new developments in the Bremen region.
For drivers, the construction site on the Weser Bridge remains a test of patience. We can only hope that the traffic control measures take effect and that traffic will soon run more smoothly. Our tip: Always take a look at the traffic information and reschedule if necessary to avoid the stressful traffic jams.
