Parking shortage in Bremen: FDP calls for an immediate moratorium!
The parking situation in Bremen is increasingly perceived critically. The problem that parking spaces are scarce, especially in many parts of the city, is causing discussions in the political sphere. The FDP parliamentary group asked the citizens for figures on the current situation in order to bring clarity to an urgent problem. Loud buten and within Those responsible at the Bremen transport authority state that there is no precise data on the number of parking stalls in publicly accessible streets.
It remains particularly unclear how many parking spaces have been lost due to renovations or conversion into bicycle parking spaces and charging points for electric cars. FDP parliamentary group leader Thore Schäck is critical of the Senate's plans to further regulate parked cars. He calls for a parking moratorium to prevent the loss of parking space without adequate alternatives.
A look at car sharing
Bremen has been actively promoting car sharing in public spaces since 2003. Around 30,000 people in Bremen currently use this service, which increases the use of car sharing vehicles to currently 630 vehicles at 160 stations. The trend is increasing, and according to a 2018 study, one car sharing vehicle replaces up to 16 private cars, showing the potential to ease the parking situation. Transit authorities have even found that the theoretical number of roadside parking stalls could increase if more spaces are converted into car sharing spaces. An example of this is the conversion of five parking spaces on Osterdeich for car sharing cars, of which one such car mathematically replaces 14 private cars.
The car sharing system will continue to be expanded in a networked manner. The Senate is planning the “mobil.points” and “mobil.pünktchen” projects to expand the existing offerings. For the coming year, city-wide citizen participation in the form of an online survey to identify additional car sharing locations is planned, like the website parken.bremen.de reported.
Smart traffic control with the parking guidance system
An additional aid to relieve the parking situation in Bremen is the modern parking guidance system. This system, which manages over 5,500 spaces in 13 downtown parking garages, directs traffic with the latest dynamic signs that provide remaining space indications. The aim is to reduce search traffic and thus also minimize environmental impact. From the outskirts of the city, traffic is directed via three-line, programmable signs that provide important information about events and parking availability, such as ASV Bremen explained.
With a well-functioning parking guidance system and the promotion of car sharing, Bremen hopes to address the scarce parking space situation in a future-oriented manner. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen how citizens will react to the plans and whether politicians will agree not to further aggravate the parking situation.
