E-truck in Lower Saxony: High costs and little charging infrastructure!

in Lower Saxony and Bremen, trucks do their job every day, but the air could be cleaner. Very few freight forwarders are ready to switch to e-trucks, although they represent an environmentally friendly alternative. Only three electric trucks are approved in Bremen, which is just 0.8 percent of the over 490 trucks in heavy traffic. In Lower Saxony, the situation does not look much better: only 27 of more than 12,500 approved heavy -duty vehicles are on the move, which means a share of 0.2 percent, such as Welt reported.

A reason for the reluctance of the purchase is the high price: an electric truck costs at least twice as much as its diesel powered counterpart. There is also a lack of suitable charging stations. The existing e-car charging stations are often not designed for the needs of trucks, which places the use of additional hurdles. After all, there is a publicly accessible charging station for e-trucks in Bremen, while the national control center charging infrastructure lists five locations in Lower Saxony for loading e-truck.

The charging stations - a crucial bottleneck

Despite the challenges, however, a positive development is emerging. The Lower Saxony Ministry of Transport is planning to build a total of 539 quick load points in the coming years. This could significantly improve the existing infrastructure. In the future, 36 locations in Lower Saxony should be available for e-trucks, so that even longer distances between cities such as Hamburg and Munich can be mastered more easily, as the EnBW explains.

Another problem remains the power grid in the region: it is not designed for private charging stations, and the local electricity works are often unable to provide the required amounts of electricity. The Bremen traffic department assumes that most companies will build their own charging stations. Therefore, a concept is currently being created to support companies in building these charging stations.

claims to politics

The discussion is also about the necessary state support. Lower Saxony demands nationwide subsidies for electric trucks, the expansion of charging stations and a suspension of the toll for emission-free vehicles. The goal is clear: the purchase of e-truck is to be made more attractive to reduce the environmental impact of heavy traffic. In addition, a electricity price brake is also required to reduce the costs for the companies.

The efforts to promote electric trucks are in full swing, but in order to create the needed change, both the infrastructure and the financial framework conditions must be made clearer and easier. The need is undoubtedly there, now it is important to take the right steps. After all, the transport sector is an essential part of our economy - and a greener future would not only be desirable, but necessary.
