Financial hardship: Bremen households fight with high additional payments!

What's going in Bremen? Since mid-May, recipients of government transfer services have reported financial difficulties, especially after additional payments have been debited for electricity and heating costs. Many people in the city, especially tenants, receive unexpected subsequent claims these days, which heavily burden their budgets. Josef Teupe from the eastern suburb has already heard of seven affected neighbors who are waiting in vain for notices from the office, while they have to make advance payments themselves, since the funds have already been debited. The waiting times for notices are sometimes more than six weeks, which makes the situation even more complicated, as an employee of the authority notes. Weserreport reports that the high workload and the lack of personnel in the offices lead to these delays.

The precarious situation is further tightened by high additional payments. Especially for people with low incomes, these financial burdens are a challenge. Inflation has greatly reduced the financial buffer of many households, so that an average single parent with two children over 500 euros in heating costs and a new discount of over 100 euros must report. This often leads to an extremely stressful situation for many families. The consumer center explains that many operating costs are incorrect and a check of the billing is advisable if there are unclears.

additional payments and legal framework conditions

affected tenants: Inside, you should know that you have the right to view invoices and receipts. If the insight is refused, it is possible to hold back and advance payments. A contradiction to possible, incorrect billing must be as quickly as possible and well -founded. Here you can also use support offices in order to secure legally. Because in the worst case, not paid additional payments can lead to the termination of the apartment, which is an existential threat to many people affected.

The financial needs have called on politics and the federal government. From January 2026, relief for private households and the economy will be introduced to energy prices in order to help the citizens: inside around 10 billion euros annually. The Federal Government plans to reduce the gas levy and a permanent reduction in electricity tax. This will not only reduce electricity costs, but also relieve the production costs in the economy, which should ultimately also secure jobs. A family of four can expect up to 100 euros less energy costs per year, which would be an urgently needed financial relief for many households.

In view of these challenges, it is all the more important that households maintain a clever handling of their finances and take advantage of support measures in good time. Tips for rejection of incorrect invoices and the possibility of paying in installments can be crucial here to get through these difficult times. Meltem Sagiroglu has also suggested to rethink the payment mode in order to create further relief for affected households. Finally, it remains to be hoped that the government's announced measures will soon take effect and contribute to the stabilization of living conditions in Bremen.
