Refurbishment of the Weserbrücken: Bremen is preparing itself for the future!

in Bremen it will be exciting: the renovation of the central Weserbrücken is pending and the first work begins in August of this year. Specifically, it is the famous Wilhelm-Kaisen Bridge, which has been an important traffic route over the Weser since its inauguration in 1960. On the bridge, which has been named the name of the Bremen post -war mayor Wilhelm Kaisen (SPD) since 1980, an enormous traffic pressure is bursting. It is therefore essential to increase the load -bearing capacity in order to continue to cope with traffic loads in the future. This is reported by the Kreiszeitung .

The renovation work that begins on August 18, 2025 is to continue until spring 2026. In order to make the bridge safer, tension ropes and tension members are installed on 16 anchor blocks. The special thing: the work is largely not visible, which is practical for pedestrians and cyclists on site. However, there is a small drop of bitterness: from November 7th to 9th, the bridge must be kept free for a full closure. In the following months, selective restrictions are planned in January and March 2026.

stress test of the mayor-Smidt-Bridge

But that's not all-the mayor-Smidt Bridge will also be prescribed a stress test on August 31, 2025. The bridge is completely blocked for this test. On this day, four trams are allowed to go through various constellations to check the stability of the bridge. In addition, these are loaded with weights and sandbags. The Tagesschau this test is around 600,000 euros.

The situation is significantly tense for the many commuters who regularly use the mayor-Smidt Bridge. After all, the trams have not been allowed to drive across the bridge since April 2025, while buses continue to offer a bypass. The results of the stress test will take six months until a decision on the return of line 1 is made.

infrastructure in focus

The priority of this renovation work is also a reaction to the generally increasing traffic loads in the city area. Bremen has an impressive variety of transport infrastructures; In total there are 502 substructures, including road bridges, walking and cycling bridges. The ASV Bremen ensures that all engineering buildings meet the requirements for safety, robustness and design. These measures are necessary to meet the requirements of urban traffic and at the same time respect the nature and city landscape.

In the coming months, the Bremeners will experience a lot of changes on the streets and bridges on the streets and bridges. It is to be hoped that the measures will take place well and that we will soon be able to drive carefree over the Weserbrücken again!
