Bremen starts e-bus revolution with 50 new environmentally friendly articulated buses!

Blumenthal, Bremen, Deutschland - In Bremen there is a breath of fresh air in public transport! Since the 23. June 2025 50 new battery -electric articular buses are used by Bremer Straßenbahn AG (BSAG). This fleet obtains its energy from a modernized depot in Blumenthal, which acts as the first full electric bus depot in the city. The buses for the 90 lines in Bremen-Nord are operated here. The switch to environmentally friendly electric buses is another step towards climate neutrality for an entire district. According to sustainable bus are the new vehicles a mixture of 35 Mercedes-Benz Ecitaro and 15 IRIZAR IE BUS 18 and are since The beginning of the year gradually arrived.

The investments in the project amount to a whopping 96 million euros. This is partially supported by the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport, which provides 22.2 million euros, supported by funding from the Next Generationu program. Around 59 million euros come from the city of Bremen and 14.7 million euros from the BSAG itself, such as electrive . If all these plans open, the entire BSAG bus fleet could be fully electrified by 2035.

The new depot in detail

In detail, the modernization of the Blumenthaler depot includes the installation of charging stations, a new infrastructure building for loading technology as well as a load and charging management system. Reinforced concrete walls for fire protection are also built. From August, a new workshop will also be operating for the electric buses, which makes it considerably easier to maintain the new fleet.

Despite the new e-buses, there will still be a reduced number of diesel buses. This is necessary because some lines in the north of Bremen have to cover routes of up to 400 kilometers, which exceeds the range of the new e-buses. In the best case, current models can drive up to 550 kilometers without a recharging. Nevertheless, the trend remains clear: electromobility is the future, and not only in Bremen! A comprehensive consideration of the development of electrical buses shows that the proportion of e-buses is growing steadily in Germany, whereby cities like Berlin pursue the goal of replacing all conventional buses with e-buses by 2030, such as emovy reported.

With over 250 trained drivers and qualified workshop staff, BSAG is well equipped for the future of mobility. Customers in Bremen can therefore look forward to more environmentally friendly and quieter local transport. The opportunities and challenges in public transport through the new e-buses are exciting and promising at the same time.
