Crime in Bremen: increase alarming - Vegesack particularly affected!

At the beginning of this year, interior senator Ulrich Mäurer (SPD) presented crime statistics for Bremen. It was noticed that the numbers in Bremen-Nord, especially in Blumenthal, Vegesack and Burglesum, went up. In 2023, a total of 8,802 crimes in the north of the city were recorded, which corresponds to an increase of 888 cases compared to the previous year. Vegesack particularly stands out with 3,680 registered offenses, while Burglesum with 2,523 offenses is at the end of the scale. Blumenthal recorded 2,599 crimes, which is an increase of 418 cases, as the Weser-Kurier reports.

But what is behind these numbers? The increasing offenses, especially theft and bodily harm, are partially attributed to inflation and a nationwide increase in violent crime. Vegesack showed most thefts with 1,676 cases, followed by Blumenthal, where the theft figures rose from 829 to 1,008. Burglesum recorded an increase from 854 to 1,165 thefts.

special offenses in focus

The CDU, which was interested in a detailed evaluation of the offenses, has made an inquiry to the Senate. An 11-page statistics that only depict a part of the offenses was transmitted as an answer. The CDU focused on six specific offenses: robbery, bodily harm, theft, burglary, drug and sexual offenses.

A closer look at the statistics shows that the crimes against sexual integrity in both parts of the Blumenthal and Vegesack have risen. In Blumenthal, the numbers rose from 60 to 90, while Vegesack recorded from 35 to 58 cases. The situation is different in Burglesum, where the number has fallen from 36 to 30. This shows how dynamic and different crime in the different districts.

declines in burglaries and drug offenses

There is a positive message in the burglaries: they dropped in both Vegesack and Blumenthal. 37 burglaries were registered in Vegesack, the decline was recorded from 83 in 2022. Blumenthal recorded 57 instead of 75 burglaries, and Burglesum also dropped from 65 to 41. A similarly gratifying trend is evident in the drug offenses that decreased in all parts of the city.

Overall, it can be seen that, despite the increase in the crimes, the information ratio, despite the increase in the city districts, reaches quite respected values in the districts: 1,557 cases could be clarified in Vegesack, which means an increase of 13.1%. In Blumenthal it is 1,152 (+20.1%), whereas Burglesum had to record a small decline with 1,094 (-0.7%).

outlook and other measures

The crime statistics will be presented in a comprehensive presentation on June 30 and is intended to provide a more detailed insight into the crime situation of the city of Bremen. Interior Senator Mäurer and the police continue to show to increase security for citizens and to counteract violent crime. It is particularly important for the socially weaker among the citizens burdened by the corona pandemic.

The numbers are an indicator of the challenges that the new Senate must master to ensure a safe living environment in Bremen and the districts. The police crime statistics 2024 promises further insights, the compilation and change processes of which should be observed closely in the coming weeks.

While the situation in Bremen-Nord stabilizes overall, it remains to be seen how the measures of the security authorities and the social framework will affect crime development.
