Summer vacation dispute: Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg pull the loser!

Bremen, Deutschland - Summer vacation, that means: pack your suitcases, recharge the sun and enjoy a well -deserved break! But as with many good things, not everything is so easy, especially when it comes to the regulations in the different federal states. This is particularly true of the students in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, who are the last to start the summer vacation. This regulation was introduced decades ago so that the children can help during the harvest time, an argument that has hardly any data these days. Some North German federal states find the late summer holidays unfair, and the discussion about the standardization of the holiday dates has long since flared up.

How does the debate go about the summer vacation? North Rhine-Westphalia has raised the demand to rethink the regulation in order to create a similarly distribution of the summer vacation for all federal states. But Bavaria is skeptical about these proposals and rejects them. This not only brings unrest into the holiday -like Germany, but also systematically ensures long -term planning: the current holiday dates apply until 2030. This regulation, in which the federal states are divided into groups, makes it possible for some federal states to start their vacation from June 20, while others will only have to wait until the middle of July, in order to then enjoy for a full two months.

The groups in the holiday calendar

A targeted system ensures that the vacation and departure of numerous families does not take place at the same time. To ensure this, five groups were formed that alternately go on vacation. Here is an overview:

  • Group I: Brandenburg, Berlin, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Schleswig-Holstein
  • Group II: Bremen, Lower Saxony, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia
  • Group III: North Rhine-Westphalia
  • group IV: Hessen, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland
  • group V: Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria

good news for Bremen: The Hanseatic city would like to continue to coordinate the holidays with Lower Saxony, which would benefit the commuter. After all, a later holiday start can also have advantages: less crowded holiday resorts and possibly cheaper travel prices in September. In addition, there would be more learning time between the Easter and summer vacation, which is not insignificant from an educational policy point of view. Nevertheless, the unjust thing remains in the room, because only 14 of the 16 federal states adhere to the agreement that was defined by the "rolling system".

a resistance to changes

Despite all the discussions, a change in the regulation that could theoretically be implemented from the school year 2030/31, still far. This presupposes that both Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg agree-which is very unlikely given the existing reservations. Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann from Baden-Württemberg sees no reason for a change and defends the long tradition against the modernization demands in the room.

The debate about the summer vacation is much more than just a question of the school year; It is about equal rights from all students in Germany, and also from other countries such as Lower Saxony and Thuringia, the desire for a fair system comes up. Perhaps a modern, fair set of rules is still possible in the future.

Time by then passes, and the students who pack their suitcases in these other federal states during the holidays are the best at the moment. It remains to be seen whether the holiday regulation will intervene in the consciousness of the population next summer. However, one thing is certain: the discussion about the summer vacation is far from the end!
