Agency of elementary school students in the East Bremen: What does that mean for the future?

In the east of Bremen, the trend is clear: the number of elementary school students goes back. In the school year 2025/26, fewer registrations were recorded, which means that a total of 32 places remain vacant in the first school year. This has an impact on school culture and future planning in the region. The schools are faced with the question of how they want to deal with the situation, because almost all primary schools in the district currently have free places - with the exception of the primary school on Uphuser Strasse, which is already in the need for renovation. These developments also raise questions about the relationship of contributions, since special places for children with support requirements (W and E-Squaces) are now available.

A look at the elementary school on Ellerbrokweg shows that more classes have been recorded there in recent years than was expected. On the other hand, the fact that no new primary school is opened on Dudweiler Straße and the considerations of moving the Dudweiler Straße to the Überseestadt are being rejected on Dudweiler Straße. At the same time, there are still ambiguities where the forerunner school could be created for the planned primary school area of the school campus Walseder Straße.

increasing need for high school

While the number of elementary school students is declining, the situation at high schools looks different. Here a need for additional places is considered safe. The Bremen-Ost comprehensive school already has over 200 first registrations with a capacity of only 126 places in the fifth year-a clear sign that the demand for school places in the field of high schools is still high. Other secondary schools, such as those on Koblenzer Strasse and the Albert-Einstein secondary school, also reach their limits.

The development of the number of students is not only important locally. It also reflects a broader trend that can be observed in educational statistics in Germany. The Commission for Statistics of the Conference of Ministers of Culture (KMK) provides the educational data that are of great relevance not only for school policy, but also for planning leisure and educational offers in municipalities. The digital offer of the Federal Statistical Office presents interactive key figures and offers a good basis for educational decisions.

Future of Education in Bremen's East

The planned measures, in particular the school campus Walseder Straße, are currently under discussion. The completion date was postponed from 2026 to 2030, which further extends the queue of questions about the school situation in the region. Above all, open questions about the situation of the after -school care center at the Ellenerbrokweg school and the renovation on Uphuser Straße employ the political decision -makers.

The educational committee has already signaled to take on these challenges in order to take into account the needs of children and families in the East Bremen as best as possible. It remains to be seen which solutions are found in order not only to solve the existing problems, but also to plan the future requirements for educational institutions.
