Bremen basketball talent: On the way to the girls' Bundesliga!

Oldenburg, Deutschland - basketball in northwest Germany looks at an exciting time. The talented players of the North West Girls from Oldenburg, which also include two Bremeners, Marla Witte and Belinay Özdemir, have been preparing intensively for the qualification for the female youth basketball Bundesliga (WNBL) in recent months. The project has been funded in the region since 2024 and offers young talents a platform to sharpen their skills and grow together.

The North-West Girls, a colorful mixed team of girls aged 14 to 16, consist of players from seven different clubs, including the Oldenburg TB (OTB). The team is committed to promoting girls in basketball, as there is a lack of corresponding offers in the northwest. In the past few months, the project has attracted a lot of attention, not only because of its sporting ambitions, but also because of the social aspects that the team hold together.

a strong will and team spirit

Although the North-West girls recently failed in the final games for the WNBL qualification, the team spirit remains unbroken. Coach Macklly Stein emphasizes that he attaches great importance to self -confidence and the positive mood in the team. "We are working on promoting the girls without building pressure," he explains, adding that they are working on improvements while continuing to take part in regular training sessions and special tournaments.

The last few weeks have been characterized by intensive preparations, including weekly training sessions, participation in the women's national league and training camp, which also included trips to Denmark and Poland. The players had to face tart defeats against established teams such as SC Rist Wedel, but they did not discourage them. On the contrary, such experiences only strengthen their will to continue working on their development.

The future of North-West Girls

For the North-West Girls, a new attempt to qualify is already on the plan. The trainer Sebastian Brunnert emphasizes how important the project is for the girls in order to be able to play basketball at a reasonable level. So far, 16 U-18 teams have applied for the WNBL, and the north-west girls will have to master upcoming challenges with a number of strong opponents, including "Project GirlSpower" Hamburg and MBA Halle.

"There is great potential for the further development of girls basketball in this region", states the German Basketball Bund, which specifically launched projects such as "Come on Girls-Let’s Play Basketball" to offer young women an appealing platform. More and more clubs are expanding their offers and are organizing special girls camps to inspire even more girls for the sport and give them access to appropriate training opportunities.

While the North-West Girls are preparing for their next challenge, the focus remains clear: it is not just about sinking the ball in the basket, but also about the sense of community, the well-being in the team and a common hair routine before training, which she lives as a special ritual. All of this shows that basketball in the northwest is not only sport, but also a story of cohesion and personal development.

The coming months therefore promise more than just action on the field-the north-west girls are ready to strive up together.
