Bremer Bikesharing: Expansion of the BRE bike stations in the north planned!

In the north of Bremen, there is a lot going on in the field of bicycle mobility: the BRE bikes have been in use since April 2025, and the first four months show promising results. Users are currently available to use nine stations in Vegesack, Blumenthal and Burglesum, with four of them physically equipped with product iron and soil markings. The remaining five are virtual and act as planned locations for a future expansion of the system. This is reported by the Weser-Kurier . It is particularly noteworthy that two more stations should be equipped with the necessary ironing and markings in the coming weeks in order to meet the increasing requirements of the users. These stations focus primarily on regional train stations and the vegesacker center, where commuters and visitors rely on the bicycles in everyday life. The competent authorities have made the location selection of data analyzes dependent in order to serve particularly highly frequented areas.

The BRE bike system in detail

By the end of 2025, an increase is sought to around 1,450 bicycles and 60 cargo bikes. This creates a more comprehensive coverage and improves the integration of the BRE bike system into the city's public transport network. Around 18,000 people have already registered for the offer, and an average of around 33,250 trips per month are registered. Each of the 1,100 BRE bikes is used once a day, which shows that the offer is well received. Also to be emphasized is the flexibility that is offered to the user through the possibility of renting and returning bicycles in flex zones, reports the Senate Department for Bau, Bremen .

Another feature that users convince is the possibility of making a reservation for a bike up to 15 minutes in advance. So you can be sure that a bike is ready for the onward journey. The current routes show that frequent endpoints of the trips are the train stations in Blumenthal, Vegesack and Lesum as well as the campus of Constructor University.

A look outside the box

In a comprehensive European comparison, the BRE bike system in Bremen does not appear as the leader. According to a report by the European Bicycle Association Cycling Industries Europe, German cities are generally weak with regard to borrowing per 1,000 inhabitants per day. Nevertheless, the report puts pressure on the federal government to recognize the importance of bike sharing as part of public transport and initiate support programs. Cities like Karlsruhe and Mannheim show what a successful integration can look like to promote the use of bikesharing. The complete report can be read on the website of Future Bicycle .

Overall, the numbers and experiences show that the BRE bike system is an important part of the mobility transition in Bremen. The continuous adaptation and expansion of the offer aims to inspire even more Bremen for cycling and thus make a contribution to a more environmentally friendly city.
