Rare silver coins from the 17th century discovered in Brandenburg!
Brandenburg an der Havel, Deutschland - There are exciting news from Brandenburg an der Havel! During the excavations on the Gotthardkirchplatz, three rare silver coins from the 17th century came to light. These coins, which come from Hamburg, the Netherlands and Switzerland, were discovered in a copper kettle. The find took place as part of a project to build a two-storey expansion construction of the “Sonnensegel” youth art gallery, which is to be realized in the next two years. Experts from the Brandenburg State Office for the Preservation of Monuments have officially confirmed the finds and are happy about the importance of this discovery.
The first of the coins found from Switzerland bears the year 1610 and shows the image of St. Oswald. The interests of historians and archaeologists are awakened, especially since the coins indicate the far -reaching national and international trade relationships of the time. Were they part of everyday life in a now lost half-timbered house that was destroyed in the turbulence of the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648)?
A look at the story
There is a suspicion that a bunt metal smith could have lived in this house. The copper kettle, in which the coins were kept, provides the researchers information about living conditions and craftsmanship in the 17th century. Nevertheless, it remains exciting how exactly the coins got there and what they say about the trade at that time.
The coins have a diameter of about three to four centimeters and could be viewed at the upcoming exhibition of the Archaeological State Museum in 2028. Restorers will now take a closer look at the finds to determine the restoration requirement and to prepare the treasure as best as possible for the public
