Bremen Kattenturm: garbage cans become colorful works of art!
Obervieland, Deutschland - On July 4, 2025, there was a special reason to celebrate in Bremen-Kattenturm: The “Kattentrash 2.0” project transformed garbage cans into living works of art. This creative project is part of a climate campaign supported by Vonovia, Gewoba and Brebau. "The promotion of social projects is important to us," explains Silke Loose, the regional manager of Vonovia Bremen Umland. The initiative aims to promote greater awareness of climate issues and sustainability in the neighborhood.
Some creative minds from the district had submitted their designs to redesign the garbage cans, which were selected by a jury. This jury consisted of representatives of the supporting organizations and artists. The topics of the designs ranged from urban nature to abstract ideas that reflect the vivid uniqueness of the quarter.
a common work of art
The implementation of the selected designs took place in the project week from June 16 to 20, with residents of the Christian Rehabilitation House Bremen actively participating under the artistic guidance of Anja Fußbach and Frank Bertoldi. The result is six colorful sculptures that combine art, commitment and climate protection.
A festive award ceremony took place on July 1st in front of the Oberwandand local office, where the winners received sustainable prizes for their creative contributions. The newly designed garbage cans can now be admired in various residential complexes in the district and contribute to the visual upgrading of the cityscape.
creative urban design and social identity
The project in Kattenturm is a prime example of creative urban design that not only promotes art in public spaces, but also strengthens cultural identity and social cohesion. According to the learning city, it turns out that the integration of art such as wall paintings and interactive installations transformed neglected areas into living activity centers. Examples like the East Side Gallery in Berlin show how art can promote civil engagement and revitalization of districts.
But challenges such as sources of financing and regulatory hurdles remain. Future trends in urban design rely on sustainability and the involvement of citizens in order to better take into account the needs of the community. In addition, the cooperation between artists and residents plays a central role in increasing the commitment to public works of art and promoting an increased sense of responsibility.
The importance of public art is emphasized again and again, since it not only affects the city of identity, but also promotes social dialogue and contributes to ecological diversity. In conversations with cities like Vienna, it becomes clear that the connection between public art and social inclusion plays a crucial role in making art more accessible and combining different communities.
Overall, "Kattentrash 2.0" is not only a festival of creativity, but also a step towards sustainability and community education in Bremen-Kattenturm-a place that shows how art and commitment can go hand in hand to enrich the urban space.
