Warning strike at Gestra: Future of the traditional company in danger!

Findorff, Deutschland - in the city of Bremen, more precisely in the Findorff district, it is currently bubbling. Gestra AG, known for its steam processes since 1902, is faced with serious concerns about its future in view of planned relocations and job reduction. Up to 85 jobs could be lost, which makes it ring for the approximately 400 employees. The IG Metall union and employee representatives promptly react and mobilize the workforce into a warning strike to set an example against the impending cuts. The warning strike is scheduled for Thursday from 9 a.m., followed by a demonstration train through the district and a rally before operation at 10:15 a.m.

The works council and IG Metall vehemently campaign for the workforce and call for a sustainable concept for the location. "The situation is serious without investments and employment assurance," said the employee representatives. There is great concern that Gestra, under the parent company Spirax Sarco, is already considering plans to relocate production locations to England, France and India, while negotiations on the future of the Bremen work are still in progress.

different perspectives on the future

The IG Metall and the company organization have doubts about the need for relocation. Despite Spirax's announcement that more than 80 employees are to be released by 2027, the company currently seems to be economically stable. "We ensure the quality and competitiveness of our products on site," explains the works council and refers to the need to keep the production capacities here in Bremen.

However, the situation is tense. "We may be experiencing the exit here," says Reiner Mertin's works council chairman. The parent company put all investments in the Bremen plant on ice. A planned magnification and the move to the StoneGut district to Grohn have also been stopped, which further increases uncertainty.

social support and solidarity

The reactions within the workforce are characterized by determination. IG Metall has already worked with the employees on an alternative concept for production in order to secure the Findorff location in the long term. "We don't put up with it," explains an employee. The upcoming actions should not only draw attention to the dangers, but also show solidarity and unity among employees.

Current statistics on the labor market situation in Germany emphasize the challenges that the Bremen location is also facing. The uncertainties with regard to possible jobs and the development of the industry are more than just a local matter. The concerns about the continued existence of the traditional company Gestra are part of a larger pattern that affects many companies in the region.

The coming days should be decisive for how the situation is developing. It remains to be seen whether the votes of the employees are heard and whether Gestra AG finds a solution that brings both the economic interests of the company and that of the employees.
