State Archives Bremen: Millimous project is stalling!
Bremen, Deutschland - Developments related to the Bremen State Archives have now run over for four years. Since the federal funding notice for the urgently needed cultivation, various delays have occurred. Konrad Elmshäuser, the head of the State Archives, recently pointed out in a cultural -political meeting that the time for the project is becoming increasingly scarce. So far, however, the Bremen Senate has not yet provided any financial resources, which, according to Elmhausen, brings the project in great danger. The frustration is noticeable because the need for an extension has been recognized for two decades. In fact, the lack of space is a chronic problem that urgently needs to be solved.
Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte (SPD) and finance senator Björn Fecker (Greens) now seem to have seen light at the end of the tunnel. In an agreement, it was determined that funds will be placed in the upcoming budget. Elmshäuser can only hope that this plan will be implemented promptly and efficiently, because the project provides for costs of 13 million euros. The federal government has already promised 4.1 million euros, and from private donations, among other things by the late honorary citizen Uwe Hollweg, another 500,000 euros come. Where the remaining means should come from is still unclear.
The planned expansion of the State Archives provides for an additional usable area of 2500 square meters, which is intended to offer enough space for around eleven kilometers of shelf. Irregularly bricked brick and a green roof not only convey a modern appearance, but also serve environmentally friendly purposes. A photovoltaic system is installed and geothermal energy is used as a sustainable energy source. The start of construction is currently scheduled for autumn or winter, with some trees have to be felled beforehand.
The previous delays were sharply criticized by Claas Rohmeyer (CDU), because he sees it as a state duty to properly ensure archiving. A plan B for the expansion does not exist if the financing fails again - a situation that is not only annoying, but also raises questions about the sustainability of the efforts. In this context, it is interesting to mention that there are various programs in cultural promotion that aim to support contemporary and cultural projects. Public and private institutions, clubs and individuals have the opportunity to apply for financial resources as long as the projects are visible in the funding year. In particular, there are exclusions for profit-oriented projects and purely institutional support activities.
The discussion about the expansion of the Bremen State Archives not only has local importance, but also throws a light on the challenges that many cultural institutions in Germany are facing. The hope remains that Bremen soon provides the necessary funds and that the urgently needed cultivation will become a reality. a new extension for more space
