Future of the Tempelhofer Feld: Six innovative designs decided!
Tempelhofer Feld, Berlin, Deutschland - The future of the Tempelhofer Feld is in the starting blocks! On June 23, 2025, the jury of the international ideas competition met and now the results have been determined: six innovative designs were selected as the winner instead of only the announced five. The variety of ideas ranges from residential buildings to recreational landscapes that could redesign the historical area of the former airport. Urban development senator Christian Gaebler (SPD) and the Senate Building Director Petra Kahlfeldt and jury chair Iris Reuther presented the diverse approaches. It becomes clear that there are many ideas for the use of Tempelhofer Feld A - a good knack for future development is required!
As part of the competition, which was awarded as an international city and open space planning ideas competition, a total of 164 work was submitted. Of this, 20 made it into the second round, with the jury finally unanimously chosing the six designs for the "price group". Gaebler emphasized the need to focus on the needs of living space and social infrastructure, but at the same time the Tempelhofer Feld remains blocked by law for comprehensive development-a legacy of a referendum from 2014. The selected designs in detail
Among the six selected designs there are some exciting concepts:
- draft 1: "Tempelhofer breath" by Schønherr: Here an intensive development is intended on the western edge, supplemented by new parking garages as noise protection walls and at least a thousand residential units.
- Design 2: New settlement by DE HONDTE HOND and Grieger Harzer Dvorak Landscape architects: Over 2400 new residential units at Tempelhofer Damm could be created here, whereby planned residential projects are to be taken into account.
- Design 3: "Exercise rooms" from the room laboratory: This plan highlights Urban Gardening and suggests a tram around the field to improve accessibility.
- Design 4: Use existing buildings from some Place Studio: The focus is on creating new uses in old walls.
- Design 5: Forest hem from BBZ Landscape architects: A tree belt around the field should put nature in the foreground.
- Design 6: Five Haine by Franz Reschke: The idea of creating five characteristic groves offers a sophisticated approach to design upgrading.
it remains unclear how the political decision -makers process with these results. The results are to be presented in a dialogue workshop on July 12th and 13th, followed by a public exhibition of the designs in autumn. Even if the coalition emphasizes that the Berliners should vote on future development, there is still no specific plan for a vote before the upcoming House of Representatives 2026.
The Tempelhofer Feld, an outstanding inner -city open space since the flight operations were stopped in 2008, is deeply rooted in the heart of Berlin. Berlin has struggled with challenges on the housing market in recent years.
