Bremen is planning a new swimming pool in Vegesack: Future of the bathrooms is on the brink!

Blumenthal, Deutschland - The bathroom landscape in Bremen faces a profound change. With the new Bath concept 2035 , which was worked out by the company Prof. Franke + Gussenberg on behalf of Sportsenator Ulrich Mäurer, a modern and economic infrastructure is to be created. The focus is on new buildings instead of renovations and a reduction in the water surfaces. This realignment is necessary, because as Jürgen Franke emphasizes, the condition of many Bremen baths is bad, with the exception of the new Horner bath and the Westbades under construction.

The renovation backlog, which is estimated at around 120 million euros, is particularly questionable. Many of the existing baths are over 35 to 40 years old, which drives their operating costs. Since 2019, the city's annual operating cost grant has more than doubled from five to over twelve million euros. The degree of cost recovery of the Bremen baths is 44.2 percent, which is above the average of comparable cities.

project and challenges

One of the central projects is the closure of the Hanse water bath on the Weser Stadium from 2026 and in the medium term of the outdoor pool in Blumenthal. Initial concerns have already been expressed, in particular on the part of the Bremen sports club, which points out that around 60 percent of the training times take place in the Hansewasserbad. The majority, however, has not yet made any final decisions.

The priority is for those responsible on the bathroom in Vegesack, where a new building is planned in the back of the property. This is to be built before the old bathroom is closed, with a cost estimate of 49 million euros for the new combined bath without wellness offers.

But the implementation is on the brink: all measures are under financing reservation and must be checked for their financial and organizational feasibility. Against this background, Bremer Bäder GmbH (BBG) and external specialists were entrusted with the development of the concept to counter the challenges of the old systems and the high operating costs.

look into the future

The goal is not only to modernize the spa landscape, but also to create energy-efficient and barrier-free bathrooms that are tailored to the needs of educational and leisure users. Digitization is also used here-in the future, real-time information via swimming pools via apps and online platforms should be available. This development could help increase the satisfaction of the users, which according to current reviews can be expanded.

A comprehensive measures and financing plan should be available by the end of 2025. The Senate would like to ensure that the necessary funds are provided for these ambitious projects in order to put the Bremen baths in a solid and future -proof location in the long term. Overall, it remains to be seen how the prioritization of the investments and the time implementation of the measures are promoted by the city.

How the entire situation around the baths will develop depends not only on the planned new buildings, but also on the organization and management of the existing resources. A sustainable concept should not only address the existing challenges, but also be viable in the long term.
