Borgfeld's church tower clock is modernized: History meets technology!

In Borgfeld there is reason to be happy! The parish is planning a comprehensive modernization of its best -known sight: the historic church tower clock. The church tower clock, which has been causing punctual bell ringing and time index for over 130 years, now urgently needs an update. As the church council, represented by Klaus, announced, it happens again and again that the clock stops if the clockwork is not drawn up manually. The reason is the steep and winding paths to the clockwork, which is currently only called by volunteers, including and Jan-Hendrik von Stemmen.

The clockwork itself, a fascinating construct of eleven wheels, steel cables and concrete weights, was donated in 1893 by the renowned tower clock factory J.F. Weule. This factory, founded by Johann Friedrich Weule in 1836 in Bockenem, has a long history and was significantly involved in the development of tower clocks and bells. The connection to the Weule-Fabrik also emphasizes the cultural importance of this watch, because it stands not only for the time, but also for craftsmanship.

modernization of technology

The planned modernization goes beyond the pure drive change. The aging electrical system for controlling the bells from the 1950s is also renewed. The parish has decided to preserve the clock's historical mechanics while a modern engine is supposed to take over the up. This preserves the original clockwork, which is held by experts according to historical standards.

The total costs for modernizing the church tower clock and the coil facility amount to at least 20,000 euros. An ambitious goal when you consider that so far only 4,000 euros have been raised in donations. However, the parish is confident and hopes to reach the necessary financial cushion soon. The big project is expected to be completed by spring 2026.

a piece of contemporary history

The tower clock not only works as a practical time, it is also a document of history. Tower clocks were already a sign of time consciousness in cities and villages in the Middle Ages. Its beginnings were around 1300 when mechanical watches came up in churches and public buildings. In Bergkirchen and Borgfeld they have a significant accompaniment to the development of the community.

The historical clockwork is currently not open to visits, but the parish is thinking about possible sightseeing dates. Interested citizens have the chance to take a look at this technical monument and to learn more about the tradition of the tower clocks.

This is not only a timepiece, Borgfeld's church tower clock remains, but will also be a symbol of the commitment of the community to keep history alive and make it accessible to future generations. How do you say so beautifully? "Time is money" - and the time that is invested here will definitely pay off!
