Garbage sculptures on the Sodenmattsee: Art against plastic pollution!
in Huchting, a Bremen district, is all about the garbage problem, especially around the Sodenmattsee. The situation has been unsustainable for a long time: chip bags, plastic bottles and crown caps lie everywhere. But the creative Initiative "My? Garbage - our! Earth" of the Huchting cultural shop should now bring light into the dark. This project aims to make the consequences of garbage pollution visible and encourages residents to think about their garbage habits.
under the direction of Vera Zimmermann, managing director of the cultural shop, ten sculptures were manufactured as part of the initiative, which were designed by cultural and theater educators, art therapists and local artists. "The lack of waste containers in our district cannot be overlooked," explains Zimmermann, who emphasizes the harmfulness of the flash. This inspired the artists to create works of art out of garbage, which mainly comes from Huchting. These sculptures are not only decorated, they also have an important message: they address pollution and show how animals are endangered by plastic waste.

draw attention to environmental protection
The social and ecological effects of plastic waste are alarming. There are around 150 million tons of plastic worldwide that drive in our oceans, while in Germany alone in Germany produces around 37.4 kilos of plastic waste a year. The effects are serious, not only for the environment, but also for health - every day people take up microplastics. Here the sculptures come in: they stand as memorials near garbage buckets in order to specifically remind visitors to the right waste disposal. "We hope that we will raise awareness of the problem," says Claudius Joecke, a co -designer of the project.
The garbage collection that took place in front of the sculptures was a month -long action. The actors received support from the “Living in Neighborhoods” program and the Advisory Board Huchting. Political sizes such as the SPD advisory board member Arne Otten and CDU MP Hartmut Bodeit are actively involved in this matter and spontaneously stand up for waste removal. There are significantly fewer contaminants in the cityscape since this project was launched. The sculptures are a kind of guide, not only for the correct handling of waste, but also for a clean neighborhood.
The role of the population
Each of us can contribute to avoiding plastic waste and more sustainability. Tips for avoiding plastic are of great importance here. For example, your own bags should be brought with you and fruit and vegetables should be bought unpacked. It also makes sense to drink water from the tap and give preference to glass products.

The importance of waste prevention is increasingly recognized. In Europe, we produce over 29 million tons of plastic waste every year. Much of it comes from retail. In addition, the decomposition of plastic is a lengthy process: While plastic bags even need up to 450 years for about 20 years and PET bottles, the microplastics often invisible in some places becomes a real problem.

Finally, it can be said: With projects such as the garbage sculptures on the Sodenmattsee, an important step is taken in the right direction. The people in Huchting are on the best way to actively protect their environment and to set an example against the plastic flood.
