Lifelong donating blood: DRK warns of the summer bottleneck in Lower Saxony!

Bremen, Deutschland - Today is June 14, 2025 and all of Germany celebrates the world blood donation day. A perfect day to look at the current situation of blood supply. In Bremen and Lower Saxony, the stock of blood cannon has stabilized, as reported to the Buten and Binnen . This is particularly gratifying after the blood donation service of the German Red Cross (DRK) had to fight with considerable bottlenecks in winter, caused by a wave of colds.

The last year was fortunately shaped by an above -average number of blood donations. In Bremen, almost 7,000 people decided to donate their blood in the first four months. Lower Saxony even recorded around 230,000 donors during this time. But there is also a drop of bitterness: the number of first -time donors drops, which is concerned about the person responsible. A DRK spokesman emphasizes that each generation needs its blood donors in order to be able to guarantee the supply in the long term.

urgent appeal for donation

The World Blood Donation Day is celebrated with various actions. The Bremen Weser Stadium invites you to donate blood from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. In Wilhelmshaven, too, donations will be called in the Rüstringen fire brigade building from 11 a.m. This is particularly important, since the ZDF point out that fewer people typically come to donate blood in summer. While the younger ones are on vacation, many older donors avoid the big summer heat.

In addition to the seasonal challenges, the increase in travel during the summer months leads to an increased need for blood. On average, around 15,000 blood cannon is required in Germany every day. But the willingness to donate, especially among young people. DRK expert Dr. Marie-Sophie Pfeffermann names altruism as the decisive motivation for many donors, but the linking of advertising and health checks could help to regain the willingness to donate.

critical situation

The current blood supply in Germany is critical, as is the DRK-Mittelstadt . Blood reserves are almost used up, which is why operations that can be planned had to be postponed. The limited shelf life of blood cannon makes complicates the creation of sufficient buffer reserves. Donated blood is usually used immediately, which also stresses the rutin of the supply.

The DRK warns of precarious medical care conditions and appeals to the population to become active. "Two blood donations per year can make a significant difference," it is emphasized. The challenge of motivating younger people in particular is enormous. A rethink is necessary because blood cannot be made artificially. A lack of donations could have catastrophic consequences.

The mood is serious, but not hopeless. An increased willingness to donate could help stabilize the supply, and at best, the DRK will continue to try to mobilize people with creative ideas. So the appeal remains clear: donate blood today and secure life with your donation!
