17-year-old escapes from the police and rams police car in Berlin!

On the night of Saturday there was a dangerous incident in Berlin-Mitte when a 17-year-old driver fled before a traffic control. The control took place around 2:45 a.m. on Kurfürstenstrasse, corner of Genthiner Straße. The young man, who noticed because of his youthful appearance, reinforced his pace, ran several red traffic lights and finally raced into a police radio vehicle that blocked his way. The collision was so violent that the police car was no longer ready to drive, which is alarming for the officials and the public.

After the collision, the 17-year-old and his three occupants fled on foot. However, the prudent police officers were able to react quickly and put the alleged driver a little later. While he was unharmed, two police officers suffered injuries. One of the officials suffered a back injury while the other was injured on the head, hand and thighs. Both had to be treated on an outpatient basis, which underlines the severity of the Situation. The young person had no driving license at the time of the incident and had rented a car that led to the accident.

Legal consequences and social context

The police are now investigating several offenses, including suspicion of a forbidden motor vehicle race, accident escape and negligent bodily harm. Driving without a license is also on the list of allegations. In addition, a cell phone with which the car was probably rented and the rental car itself ensured to collect further evidence. What makes this incident particularly delicate is the context of youth crime in Germany.

Youth crime is a topic that is regularly discussed in society. Statistics show that up to 70% of the students have become delinquent in the past 12 months, with the majority of young people listening to their criminal behavior. It is particularly noteworthy that over 80 % of boys and 70 % of the girls between the ages of 13 and 18 have been punishable at least once. The question is often raised how such acts can occur in a social environment, since not all crimes are displayed and crime is not a fixed phenomenon. The 17-year-old's case could serve as an example of an important social problem that requires prevention and education.

The investigation into the incident in Berlin-Mitte runs in full swing. When considering the likelihood that young people will slip into crime from precarious social conditions, it becomes clear that more than just punctual measures are necessary. The question arises how such incidents can be avoided in the future and what role preventive measures, such as education and integration, can play.
