District Osterholz is planning great nature conservation for Blumenthaler Aue!

In the district of Osterholz, something happens in nature conservation! The district is currently planning to designate a nature conservation regulation for the middle run of the Blumenthaler Aue up to the state border. The aim of the initiative is to improve the water state and to secure the flora and fauna in a 133 hectare area. The area between Schwankenfurth and Beckedorf is particularly worthy of protection, which has not yet been registered as a Natura 2000 area in the EU, such as the Weser-Kurier reported.

But not all are enthusiastic about the plans of the district. Torsten Wischhusen, CDU district council member, expresses concerns and refers to existing guidelines for biotope and water protection. His opinion finds support from district farmer Stephan Warnken and hunters' representative Jürgen Schindler, who, however, both do not have voting rights. Despite these critical voices, most committee members approved the draft regulation, while a participation procedure is to be started in autumn.

environmental protection in focus

The Blumenthaler Aue has been classified as priority waters since 2000 and must be transferred to an ecological state at least good. According to the district, it is still in an unsatisfactory state. Warnken sees over -compensation and over -regulation in the new regulations, an accusation that environmental director Dominik Vinbruck rejects. "The entire industry cannot be held responsible for the missteps of an individual," he emphasizes.

The discussion about the Blumenthaler Aue shows how important nature conservation is in cooperation with the water management - a topic that is also anchored in the guideline of the Water Framework Directive (WRRL). This describes the cooperation between nature conservation and water management as a key to achieving the goal. The WRRL, a central political instrument in water protection, integrates modern approaches and bundles numerous individual guidelines of EU water law, as the Environmental Federal Office explained.

criticism and demands

Another discussion point among those involved is the lack of consideration of the upper reaches of the Blumenthaler Aue. Dörte Gedat from the Greens calls for a review of the protection of the entire water, but their applications on this topic have been rejected. Jutta Kemmer from the nature conservation associations, on the other hand, demands comprehensive protective measures for the Blumenthaler Aue, while the discussion about protected areas continues in the district. The district is also planning to designate additional protected areas, including the Schwaneweder Beeke and other parts of the Blumenthaler Aue.

The coming months offer the opportunity to hear the various voices and interests as part of the participation process. The dialogue will be crucial to find the balance between environmental protection and the needs of residents and farmers. After all, it is about ensuring sustainable protection of nature and at the same time not losing sight of regional development.
