The team has had a remarkable journey to get to the championship. After a difficult start in Kelkheim, the Black Swans collected enough points at three other tournaments to qualify as a ninth place for the big event. "The previous year's ranking divided us into heavier groups, but we did our best," explains Meinhold. In total, the trainer has covered around 5000 kilometers for training and tournament participation. A real marathon that is supposed to be worthwhile!

The squad for the German championship comprises eleven or twelve players, including the talented Philina Pießnack and Charlotte Punte from HSG Lesum/St. Magnus and Greta Petersen from SV Grambke-Oslebshausen. The sisters Runa (Buxtehuder SV) and Elya Batista (VfL Oldenburg), who have a connection to the region, also contribute to the team spirit. The Black Swans had a reason to celebrate last year: at the A-youth championship in the sand they secured the bronze medal. A sign that there is a lot of potential in this team.

A particularly motivating environment is created by supporting sponsors that help to cover the costs of participating in the championship that amount to around 6,000 euros. "I want the team to play and have fun," says Meinhold, who of course also prepared his protégés for the sporting result.

The way to the championship

How does the whole thing actually work? The German Beach Handball Championships are the Highlight of the national competition and have been taking place in Cuxhaven since 2022. There, the ten best beach handball teams compete against each other in two five groups before going to the knockout round. The championships take place from July 25th to 27th, 2025, and Cuxhaven becomes a sporting competition with thousands of spectators.
