Burglesum, Deutschland - In Bremen-Lesum, the renovation measures in the Mühlenacker residential complex have now ended their successful end after over two years. On June 6th there was a day of an open house, which not only marked the completion of the construction work, but also the residents: inside gave the opportunity to take a look at their new habitats. There is joy!

The conversions carried out include important features such as a transparent noise protection facade that shields the sound outwards, as well as the installation of smoke detectors in all rooms - a measure that ensures more security. In addition, new parking spaces were created, which makes everyday life of residents considerably facilitating. It is also a new fairway for the residents who live in the facilities in the mostly fled families. A total of 216 people are housed in 80 one and three-room apartments.

The residents come from different countries, with about half of the Ukraine. The other half consists of people from countries such as Turkey, Ghana, Afghanistan, Serbia, Syria and Iran. Particularly noteworthy: Almost half of the residents are children who enrich life in the facility together with older residents. This shows that an integrative society is possible if you create the right framework.

For many, the accommodation has already led to a new home. Like Rodin Youssef, who fled from Syria with her husband and four children and is now working in the restaurant of the residential complex. Javid Mohammed, a 19-year-old from Afghanistan, also has great dreams. He wants to become a real estate merchant. Such stories strengthen the community spirit and show that integration is an active process that needs support.

Despite the positive developments, refugee people in Germany face the challenge of finding their own apartment. After the initial reception, many are accommodated in shared accommodation, as in Lesum, and often going to their own apartment is stony. A problem that results from the high demand for living space and is still tightened by legal hurdles such as residence requirements and financial requirements such as deposits. It is not an easy undertaking in a tense housing markets where refugees often come across a wide variety of barriers.

Nevertheless, the search for volunteers is recommended that the residents can support in particular in learning the German language. Projects such as creating a playground plan or an urban gardening project are just a few ideas that could promote cooperation.

The development of the living situation remains a central topic in Bremen and other cities, since the demands on the integration of refugees are still increasing. The social cohesion is only strengthened if we find common solutions that focus on humanity and support.
