Tenth Dixieland Festival: Jazz, swing and dance at the Lesumhafen!

It will be particularly musical at the Lesumhafen this year, because the Dixieland, Jazz & Swing Festival invites you to the tenth edition. From August 29 to 31, 2025, visitors can expect a colorful program that celebrates the lightness and fun of the music of the "Jazz Age" America. The event is presented by Purnhagen Immobilien and takes place at one of the most picturesque spots of Bremen.

But what makes this anniversary event so special? The start will take place on Friday, August 29, with the band Rootbirds, a young septet from Osnabrück. This talented group specializes in the music of the "Golden 20s" and brings a piece of history directly to the present with its own arrangements and transcriptions. They are inspired by sizes such as Bix Beiderbecke, Duke Ellington and Paul Whiteman. The first appearance of the Rootbirds takes place at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., and the official opening of the festival is celebrated at 5:45 p.m.

A look at the history of the Dixieland

Dixieland, a genre that arose in the 1910s, represents the earliest form of jazz, which was largely shaped by white musicians, who tried to understand the typical jazz sound from New Orleans. Interestingly, the origins of this style of music go back to the first recordings of a Dixieland band in New York in 1917. The term “Dixieland” refers to the southern United States southern and has various theories about its origin. One says that it is a modification of French $ 10-do notes that were known as "Dixies".

A crucial moment in the development of the Dixieland jazz was the foundation of the original Dixieland Jass Band by Nick Larocca, which contributed to the first jazz recordings on record. This style is characterized by the joy of playing, group improvisation and the combination of melodic instruments such as trumpet, clarinet and trombone with a rhythmic accompanying group. Over the years, Dixieland has produced various currents, including the Chicago Style, which is more influenced by swing, and the West Coast Revival, which is known for its clear sound.

Dixieland today: A festival for lovers

Although Dixieland is no longer played as often in today's music landscape, the genre still has a passionate fan base. An example of the popularity is the International Dixieland Festival in Dresden, which attracts around 500,000 visitors annually. The big names of the Dixieland include artists such as fields of Bilk, Louis Armstrong and Ken Colyer, who have shaped the genre with their unique style.

For everyone who is interested in the music and atmosphere of the Dixieland, the festival at the Lesumhafen is an excellent opportunity. Not only good music is offered, but also the opportunity to immerse yourself in the relaxed atmosphere of this music direction.
