48-year-old man brutally attacks his girlfriend - son alerts the police!
In a shocking act of violence in Bremen-Hastedt, a 48-year-old man attacked his 40-year-old girlfriend. The incident occurred on August 10, 2025 at around 4:00 p.m. at the couple's apartment. According to Bild, the man hit the woman several times and choked her until she lost consciousness. To make matters worse, the woman's son was present at the time of the crime. The boy ran into the street and desperately sought help from a passer-by, who quickly alerted the police.
The police immediately arrived at the scene and were able to overpower the attacker, who resisted arrest. The woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries, where she is being treated as an inpatient. Prosecutors decided that the perpetrator will remain in custody while the investigation continues. Such acts of violence shine a bright light on a social problem that is deeply rooted in German society.
A problem for society as a whole
Violence against women is not an isolated case in Germany, but a widespread phenomenon. According to Statista, in 2023 around 181,000 of a total of 256,000 victims of domestic violence will be female. However, the number of unreported cases often remains high because many crimes go unreported. The reason for this can often lie in the social norms and values that influence the willingness to report. Domestic violence, including intimate partner violence, is one of the most serious violations of human dignity and is perceived as particularly traumatizing by those affected.
The most common crimes in this area are intentional simple bodily harm (over 144,000 cases) as well as threats and stalking. Conversely, men are usually more likely to be victims of kidnappings of minors. In contrast, it appears that almost 100% of victims of sexual crimes are women. This targeted violence often leads to a feeling of threat, particularly among women in public, especially in the dark.
Measures and offers of help
To counteract the problem, effective measures are necessary. According to DIW, this includes, in addition to criminal prosecution, prevention and victim protection. Studies show that specialized courts increase victims' willingness to report domestic violence and cooperate with the police. This system could significantly reduce the likelihood of repeated violence.
Offers of help such as the “Violence against Women” helpline on 116 016 are receiving more and more contacts. In 2023, there were around 86,700 contacts and around 59,000 consultations for those affected. In addition, around 30,200 women and children found protection in 378 women's shelters, although space is often limited.
The events in Bremen-Hastedt are another wake-up call about how urgently measures against violence against women are needed. Society has a duty to break this vicious circle and provide victims with the support they need.
