Alcoholized drivers caused 42,000 euros in damage in Hemelingen

Saturday evening, July 5, 2025, was anything but a quiet evening for a 62-year-old man from Hemelingen. Around 8:20 p.m., his Opel picked up a chaotic journey that was reminiscent of a slalom course. At first the alcoholized driver wanted to drive backwards out of his entrance, but quickly got into trouble when he collided with a Kia. This was just the beginning of an expensive mishap.

The man did not seem to stop: after the collision with the Kia, he drove forward and rammed a garden fence, pushed against a garden gate and then against a Mercedes. Despite the polter, he then crashed into a street sign in Hemelinger Heerstrasse. Finally he continued his journey into Schlengstrasse, where he was captured by attentive witnesses until the emergency services arrived. These could look at an astonishing damage balance of around 42,000 euros.

alcoholized driving style with consequences

A breath alcohol test resulted in a value of over 0.7 per thousand. The man was not only in the area of danger of road traffic, but also a blood sample was ordered to check possible drug use. This is not without consequences: a criminal complaint was prepared due to the endangerment of road traffic as a result of alcoholic enjoyment. Such situations are unfortunately not uncommon. According to [Auto Motor und Sport] (https://www.auto-motor-und-sport.de/verkehr/verkehrsunfaelle-mit- alcohol- and-drogen-eine-bilanz/), 70.4 % of car drivers who caused an accident with personal injury due to alcohol have at least 1.1 per thousand. It is also noteworthy that each fifth had a value of over 2.0 per thousand.

Statistically speaking, the age range between 45 and 54 years is severely affected. During this period, 34.3 % of the drivers with over 2.0 per thousand caused accidents. Significantly fewer affected young drivers can be found between the ages of 18 and 24. The proportion of alcoholic female road users in accidents is only 13.6 % - an encouraging number compared to the proportion of men. In 2025 a total of 2.3 million accidents were registered, including 26,882 under the influence of intoxicating means, which corresponds to 1.6 %.

The dangers of road traffic

The current traffic statistics in Germany, as published on Destatis, shows the dangers of road traffic. In recent years, a decline in alcohol accidents with personal injury has been recorded by 75.6 %. Nevertheless, alcohol remains a common cause of accidents, which is considered jointly responsible for 5.1 % of accidents with personal injury. Another alarm development is the increase in accidents in drugs that rose by 0.7 % to 2,409 accidents.

According to the statistics, most alcohol -related accidents occur within the villages, and the likelihood of accidents is particularly high on weekends, while very alcohol -related accidents have been registered from Monday to Wednesday. Most of the accidents between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., which underlines the need to deal with one's own alcohol consumption more consciously.

The investigation into the incident in Hemelingen continues. The more such stories come to light, the more important it becomes to promote awareness of responsible use of alcohol in road traffic. In a city like Bremen, in which, according to the statistics, only 4.0 % of the accidents are alcohol, there is hope that we will be safer on the streets.
