Fraudsters hit: shock calls endanger Bremen seniors!

in Bremen-Vahr, more precisely in the Neue Vahr Nord district, on June 24, 2025 there was a unfortunate incident, which once more shows the unscrupulous methods of fraudsters. An 88-year-old senior citizen was the victim of a so-called shock call, in which the caller spent out as a police officer. According to News today, the perpetrator claimed that her daughter had caused a serious traffic accident, in which two deaths had occurred. The caller, who introduced himself as Mr. Braun, wanted to put the woman under pressure by saying that her daughter was seriously injured in the hospital.

The elderly lady was unsaved by the unsustainable claims and won cash while her daughter came home shortly afterwards. This immediately clarified the situation: there had been no accident. But the fraudster was not beaten-soon afterwards the 88-year-old received another call from a supposed policewoman who confirmed the same fraud stitch and put additional pressure on the two women. Ultimately, the daughter handed over cash to a man who spent a criminal officer - a stupid thing when you consider that the police never ask for cash.

fraud by shock calls

This form of fraud is unfortunately not an isolated case, but a recurring phenomenon. According to police consultancy , shock calls are attempts to fraud, in which criminals pretend to be relatives or police officers in order to persuade the called to hand over money or value. The perpetrators often put their victims under pressure and claim that they urgently have to help financially while presenting themselves as close people.

Another characteristic of these fraud is the time pressure because the callers provoke quick decisions. The Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) warns in a current note that several complications often act together. So it may be that the fraud is maintained by several telephone calls from the same mastermind, whereby each caller can slip into the role of another "authority". In many cases there are also high money sums at stake, with fraudsters demanding sums of up to 100,000 euros.

prevention measures

To protect themselves against these fraudulent machinations, there are some proven tips that everyone should take. On the one hand, the Bremen police are very clear in their warning: number 110 should always be chosen in the event of uncertainty. The BKA also not to be put under pressure and in doubt. It is also important to never reveal personal or financial information on the phone and not hand over cash or valuables to strangers. If such a call is received, a confidant should be consulted.

It is important to remember: the treatment of accident victims or the release from a supposed emergency never depends on a payment of money. Anyone who ever gets into such a situation is well advised to inform the local police immediately and report the incident. With a watchful look and the right information you can protect yourself and others from these brazen fraudsters.
