Strong protest at the University of Bremen: Students are fighting precaration!

Bremen, Deutschland - On June 3, a fresh wind attacked at the University of Bremen. Over 800 students and some employees came together to form the first quorum general assembly in order to loudly position themselves against the urgent problems of the time. In the middle of increasing semester fees, ever higher pressure from rents and the ubiquitous inflation, the call for change was loud. The participants: Inside, clearly recognized: it cannot go on like this. In this sense, great against class reports that central issues of the assembly were the underfunding of the universities and the strengthening of inequalities.

The meeting also brought with it a concentrated charge of claims that reflect the heart of the students and employees. This included, among other things, the demand for the abolition of unpaid internships, the disclosure of the university's business books and the end of precarious employment relationships. A clear voice rose for the urgent increase in the BAföG and the de -bureaucratization of the processes at the university. Compliance with collective agreements was also vehemently requested. The Marxist university group added further applications that the assembly accepted majority and should set the course for a solidarity.

protests and social inequality

The commitment of the students once again illustrates how serious the situation is. In Bremen in particular, a third of the population lives in poverty, which is why it is not surprising that the discussion about the effects of background and state cuts was lively. In particular, armaments research that the University of Bremen is involved met with massive criticism. "We have to stand up against these injustices together and raise our voices," was the call, which many participants: in the inside with joy to position themselves against social cuts and against the upgrade.

A central point of the discussion was precarious employment, which is widespread and socially problematic in Germany. A current investigation has shown that about a eighth of the German employment population is permanently occupied and suffering from uncertain budgetary situations. These grievances make it clear how important it is to also fight for social justice in the academic world. However, analyzes in this regard are missing, and the topics of precarious employment and budget situations were often considered separately, as the WSI has already emphasized.

A call to unit

With an urgent appeal, a representative of the company group of scientific employees turned to the meeting. She reported on the stressful conditions in which many employees have to work. The key messages were unity and co -determination to make the university a place of democracy and transparency. The proposal for the establishment of committees and general meetings was very well received and was seen as an essential step in the right direction.

In conclusion, it remains to be said: The general assembly has impressively proven that the students and employees in Bremen are not willing to accept the developments. The call to unity between students and employees is clear. It is time to fight for an inclusive university in which the voices of everyone hear.
