Bremen's gymnastics star Karina Schönmaier: Triumph and honor for EM gold!

Huchting, Deutschland - Karina Schönmaier, an emerging gymnast from Bremen, was duly celebrated in her hometown on June 13, 2025. In the sports hall of TuS Huchting, the place where she started gymnastics at the age of five, there was a special honor. Together with friends, family and supporters, the 19-year-old enjoyed a reception, which came up with sparkling wine, balloons and warm congratulations from association representatives and politicians. Schönmaier has developed from Huchtingen girl to a two -time European champion in just a few years and can look back on a promising career.

Schönmaier's success story started early. Under the guidance of her trainer Katharina Kort, it was quickly recognized that she had a special talent in the jump. "I have often accompanied them to competitions and drove them to Buchholz for training," says Kort proudly. However, the conditions in Bremen were not optimal; The training room was too small, which is why Karina had to train outdoors for her jumping. However, this does not prevent the athlete from pursuing her dreams. At the age of 17, she took the step to the federal base in Chemnitz to be able to use better training conditions.

European champion at the jump

The hard work has paid off: Schönmaier secured the gold medal in the jump final with 13.983 points in the recently held European Gymnastics Championships in Leipzig. In doing so, she left well -known competitors like Walentina Georgiewa from Bulgaria and Lisa Vaelen from Belgium. This medal is not just a personal achievement; It also represents a turning point for the German Turner Association, since the last European Championship gold among women was won by Oksana Chusovitina in 2008. In addition, she won silver with the team and another gold medal in the newly introduced mixed team final alongside Timo Eder, which marks a historical success for the team.

Schönmaier was paused by Gerben Wiersma, the women's head coach, for the all-around battle to optimize their chances in the jump final. "The decision was right," Wiersma looks back on the competition. "Karina has developed enormously in recent years, especially since her last European Championship participation in Rimini, where she became fifth and has improved her exercise on the jump," continued Wiersma.

A look into the future

The success of Karina Schönmaier does not without consequences for the future gymnasts in Bremen. The TuS Huchting plans to build a new, larger hall to offer the athletes better training conditions in the future. This could help to develop further talents and to strengthen the sport in the region.

The women's team in the gymnastics team Germany pursues the ambitious goal of counting the world elite. With athletes such as Elisabeth Seitz, Emma Malewski and Helen Kevric, the team is excellently positioned for the upcoming challenges. Schönmaier's success certainly helps to show the young gymnasts in Bremen and all over Germany that hard work and dedication pay off. The path is prescribed and the future looks promising.
