Little electric trucks in Lower Saxony and Bremen: What is behind it?

So far,

electric cars have a long way to go in a long way in heavy goods traffic in northwestern Germany. Despite growing developments and adjustments in the industry, the numbers in Bremen and Lower Saxony are modest. At the beginning of the year, only three e-trucks with a weight of 12 tons or more are approved in Bremen. In Lower Saxony, on the other hand, there are 27 electric trucks, which corresponds to only 0.2 percent of over 12,500 approved vehicles with this payload. Here it takes action!

Christian Richter from the Lower Saxony Association reports that companies are investing in electromobility, but the acquisition costs for an electric truck that are between 220,000 and 230,000 euros are an important obstacle. In addition, these trucks cost at least double compared to conventional models. However, Hellmann Worldwide Logistics from Osnabrück is one step ahead: They have been using their own electric cars since 2024. This fleet now comprises two electrically operated 40-tonneys and four 16-tonner and thus accounts for about five percent of their overall fleet.

challenges in charging infrastructure

Currently, e-trucks enjoy a range of up to 350 kilometers, but the loading times should not be underestimated: an almost empty battery takes about 80 minutes for a complete charge. As a rule, charging is on the company premises; External charging stations are only used in exceptional cases. Interestingly, Hellmann produces the required electricity through a solar system on the hall roof at its Bremen location. Four other locations are planned for the next year, which are to be equipped with charging infrastructure.

In Lower Saxony there are currently only five locations for e-truck charging stations, while only a publicly accessible charging station exists in Bremen. However, these lean numbers could change soon: Lower Saxony plans to build 539 quick load points in the next few years. In order to support the expansion of the urgently needed charging infrastructure, the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport has launched a new funding program that is aimed specifically at commercial fast loading points for cars and trucks. There are up to 400 million euros available for this program, with particularly small and medium -sized companies benefit from a funding rate of up to 40 percent.

a step into the future

The goal of the federal government is a nationwide network of one million charging points by 2030, whereby the acceptance of electric cars depends heavily on the availability of the charging infrastructure. Over two thirds of the respondents in a survey stated in the end of 2022 that poor charging infrastructure was the main reason for reservations when buying electric cars. In fact, the expansion of the fast charging infrastructure is crucial for the future of electromobility in Germany.

But what does the future bring? The potential of e-mobility in heavy goods traffic remains enormous, and it is due to the company and politics to set the right course to promote electromobility and to effectively address the challenges. Support from the federal government could be the key to sustainable progress. The pressure is there, but the first steps are taken. It is to be hoped that they will bear fruit in the foreseeable future.
