Thousands celebrate at the CSD in Hanover: a sign of diversity!

Hannover, Deutschland - On June 7, 2025, Christopher Street Day (CSD) in Hanover attracted around 6,500 people to a colorful demonstration train. Despite the initial rain, the mood was positive and lively, as Nadine Rochlitzer confirmed from the CSD board. Around 5,500 participants were present at the subsequent rally. Prime Minister Olaf Lies (SPD) addressed a greeting to the crowd and set an example for diversity and equality. According to the authorities, the event was calm and peaceful, which only intensified the positive atmosphere. Musical performances as well as information stands and culinary offers were planned for the afternoon and evening hours.

The increase in hate crime against queer people lies like a shadow above the colorful event. In Lower Saxony, an alarming increase has been documented. There have already been several attacks this year, including a serious incident in which a young transmann was beaten at a CSD. In view of these incidents, the Lower Saxony state government plans to reinforce the efforts in the fight against queer hostility. Interior Minister Daniela Behrens (SPD) emphasized social responsibility for freedom and tolerance, and measures to protect queer should be established.

statistics and need for action

The crime statistics from recent years have revealed a dark picture: the number of documented queer anti -queer crimes alone increased from 29 in 2019 to 94 in 2022. These alarming numbers not only reflect an increasing willingness to violence against the LGBTQ+community, but also a growing awareness of those affected who dare to report incidents to the police. Leon Dietrich has been a state coordinator for the Lower Saxony police in the LSBTIQ.

In June 2023,

As part of the Interior Ministers' Conference, concrete recommendations for action to combat homophobers and transforming violence were decided. Among other things, these recommendations include an improvement in the training of the police, the increase in the number of contact persons in the police departments and targeted prevention measures. There is an urgent need to increase the "Hellfeld" in queer -anti -queer crimes and to increase the sensitivity to these topics.

A look into the future

The upcoming Pentecost Sunday again offers the opportunity to celebrate the diversity when another festival is planned in Hanover from 1:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. It remains to be hoped that despite the violent incidents and falling tolerance, the message for more equality and support for queer people remains clear and unmistakable. The commitment of everyone involved is more important than ever in order to set clear signs against discrimination and open a new chapter of acceptance and respect. The governments and authorities are responsible not only to react, but also to take proactive measures in order to guarantee a safe environment for everyone.
