Burglary in Bremen Church: Unknown stealing money and technology!
The church on Seewenjestraße in Bremen was the goal of a burglary on the night of Pentecost Sunday. Unknown perpetrators pried open the front door and ransacked several rooms. They stole cash, a keyboard and a computer. Interestingly, parts of the stolen good were found near the church. The parishioners noticed the incident on Sunday morning around 8:10 a.m. and immediately informed the police. The criminal police have already started the investigation and asks for information from the population who can be reported on 0421 362-3888. Weser-Kurier reports on this incident.
A break -in into a church is not an isolated case. A different incident was only known in the Bremerhaven in the early April, in which a copper plate was stolen from the southern front door of the Great Church. The estimated damage amounted to around 400 euros. Such deeds are not new in the region: more than 30 copper plates were already stolen in 2021, and in 2023 parts of a lightning rod were separated. Buten and inner points out that the police also ask for information.
vandalism of churches increases
The current events in Bremen and Bremerhaven are part of a worrying trend: in Germany cases of church descriptions are increasing. Oidac Europe has documented numerous incidents before Easter, including vandalism in different federal states. In Mainz, confessors were destroyed and holy water contaminated with faeces, while in Baden-Württemberg the Easter candle and the altar bible were smeared. According to katholisch.de , the recording of such anti-Christian offenses is insufficiently noted by the state, which the director of Oidac, Anja Hoffmann, notes.
In 2023, not an arson attack in nationwide statistics on political crime were registered, but 55 property damage to churches. Many countries are faced with similar problems, especially in Austria, where 150 anti-Christian hate crimes were reported. The increase in these incidents shows that there is a great need for action to ensure the safety of churches and their facilities.
The recent burglaries and vandal files make it clear that the topic of protection and securing church facilities must also be brought into public awareness in Bremen. Especially at a time when the churches often fight with challenges anyway, it is questionable that such criminal acts increase on them.
