CDU and citizens' initiative: Stop building a new school in Waller's home district!

In Bremen, the planned new building of the Überseestadt secondary school is causing lively discussions, especially in Waller's home district. Since the last week of August, residents and politicians alike have been upset about plans that envisage a complete development of the home green. According to the Citizens' Initiative Heimatsgrün Waller Wied Weser courier supported the CDU motion to immediately stop the school construction plans and called for the high school to be built in the new Kellogg Höfe district. The CDU motion will be discussed in the parliament on September 9th, and in order to achieve a majority, the CDU needs the votes of at least 13 MPs from other parliamentary groups.

The supporters of this application also draw attention to the signed petition submitted by 1,245 people to preserve the central home green. If everything goes according to plan, investor Klaus Meier could implement the school at Kellogg Höfe faster than the responsible authority. But the whole thing also puts the Senate in a quandary; He sees no significant ecological disadvantage from the new building, which is supported by various departments. But there seems to be a great diversity of opinions here: While the education authority sees the location as positive for social integration, political actors such as the Greens are also sounding the alarm.

Demand for compromises

Because there are considerations among the Greens that are not simply satisfied with the allocation of school places. Although they recognize the urgent need for new school places, they are also committed to a sustainable solution that preserves the valuable local green area of Berliner Straße. Their plans envisage a two-part solution: the gymnasium could be built on the home green, while the school could be located on the neighboring GAV site. Ralph Saxe, the environmental policy spokesman, repeatedly emphasizes the importance of these green spaces for the urban climate. A proposal that is also supported by the Waller advisory group. This envisages a container school as a temporary solution in Überseestadt and calls for the construction projects to be divided up (cf. Green Bremen ).

What does this mean for urban development as a whole? We live in a time where more and more people live in cities, which brings opportunities but also challenges. Sustainable urban development is not just a buzzword, but a lived reality that is of central importance to all urbanists. More than half of the population works here, and as cities have grown, so have the demands on infrastructure. Opportunities to improve urban life are not only urgently needed, but also required in order to create an environment worth living in. The discussion about the new high school building is only a small but important part of this large puzzle of sustainable urban planning (cf. ESD portal ).

As the voices from the various factions make clear, it is important to listen to all those affected and take their perspectives into account. This is the only way to find a positive solution for the Waller home district that takes both the educational and ecological needs of the residents seriously. It remains to be seen how the citizens will decide on September 9th.
