Girls' football is booming in Bremen: record numbers and new teams!

Women's football is booming - and not only on the big stages of the world, but also very locally here in Bremen! Today the German national team of women plays against the Netherlands in the Weser Stadium and this not only draws football fans into the stadiums, but also has a positive effect on the structures of girls' football in the region.

The current figures speak for themselves: In the DFB, the number of members of girls up to 16 years of age has reached an impressive increase of 7% to almost 119,000. The number of girls' teams has also grown by 10%, so there are already over 6,000 teams in the 2024/2025 season. This was reported by the sports experts from ButUnunbinnen.de.

increasing encouragement in Bremen

The Bremen Football Association confirms these developments: While 26 registered girls' teams still existed in 2022, there are now 44! Oliver Baumgart, a representative of the association, is enthusiastic about this increase in teams. The Vice President of the Association, Ulrike Geithe, points out challenges. The lack of well -trained trainers and attractive offers for girls in clubs urgently must be remedied in order to continue to promote a positive trend.

Historically, women's football in Germany has a long way behind it. It was banned until 1955, and this ban was only lifted in 1970 - at that time the first step was taken to a sporting success. Since then, the women's national team has not only established itself as a double world champion, but also as an eight-time European champion. Germany is currently taking third place in the world rankings and goes to the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 with great ambitions, which takes place in Switzerland this July. Statista emphasizes that over 75% of German women show great interest in football.

an exciting future for girls' football

The numbers are encouraging: around 100,000 women and 107,000 girls up to 16 years of age actively play in Germany. Last season there were almost 9,700 female teams reported. In the age group up to the age of 16 in particular, a leap in players and teams have a leap in players, which illustrates the relevance and popularity of women's football.

All eyes are also focused on the upcoming games, among other things, Germany will play against Colombia in the Women's World Championship in Sydney on July 30, 2023 after winning their first group game 6-0 against Morocco. It is clear that girls' football is on the rise both in Bremen and all over Germany. With so much positive energy, it is no wonder that more and more young girls are enthusiastic about this sport. Football becomes a real passion and the future looks promising!
