Fatal accident in Bremen: 19-year-old rides red traffic lights!
A serious accident occurred on Wednesday morning around 6.50 a.m. on the Motorway feeder Überseestadt. A 19-year-old driver collided with a 34-year-old motorcyclist who was traveling towards the city center on the opposite side of the street. The younger driver had driven out of the city and intended to turn left into Ingolstädter Straße. Witnesses report that the driver previously ran over a red traffic light and this was the trigger for the collision in the intersection area, as the Weser-Kurier documented.
The consequences of the impact were devastating: the motorcyclist was thrown into the air several meters and struck hard on the asphalt. In doing so, he contracted life -threatening injuries and had to be taken to the hospital immediately. The 19-year-old driver also suffered serious injuries and was taken to the clinic. Both vehicles involved had to be towed, the property damage is estimated at around 32,000 euros. The traffic commissioner of the Bremen police has now started the investigation to clarify the exact approach of the accident.
Current traffic accident numbers
accidents like this are unfortunately not uncommon despite increased security measures. According to current statistics, there were around 2.5 million road traffic accidents in Germany in 2023. While most of these accidents only resulted in damage to property, the figures for personal injury remain at a similar level as it has been since the 1950s. An alarming trend is the increase in traffic accidents, especially on main roads and highways, where the number of accidents are far higher than on less used roads. It is to be hoped that the objective of the EU Transport Minister-the Vision Zero, i.e. no more road deads will be achieved by 2050.
Surprisingly, the downward trend of the road dead in Germany has slowed down since early 2010. In 1970 the statistics still counted 19,193 traffic fatalities, while in 2023 by 2,839. In the meantime, the number of traffic fatalities remains around 34 per million compared to the population, which is still relatively high in a European comparison.
causes of the accident in the focus
The most common causes of accidents are inadequate distances, non -adapted speed and drive under the influence of alcohol. In 2023, around 15,700 alcohol -related accidents were registered with personal injury that led to 193 deaths - an urgent reference to the risks caused by alcohol at the wheel.
In addition, there is an increasing number of accidents with the involvement of e-bikes and e-scooters. Today's statistics show that an increase in accidents with injured and killed can be observed in these areas. In relation to the total number of bicycles and e-bikes, e-bike drivers are more often involved in accidents than their non-motorized colleagues, which makes additional measures to improve traffic safety.
The knowledge from the accident statistics, such as those compiled by the Federal Statistical Office [Destatis], are crucial for the development of future security standards in road traffic and for the design of transport infrastructure. It remains to be hoped that such serious accidents such as that in Bremen will lead to rethinking and create more awareness of security in traffic.
