Blood donations urgently wanted: who saves life in hot summer?
The German Red Cross (DRK) reports that the blood cannon trees in Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia are currently well positioned. However, Markus Baulke from the blood donation service NSTOB points out that the willingness to donate often decreases, especially in the warm months. On the occasion of the upcoming World Blood donation day on June 14th call up the DRK blood donation services and appreciate the tireless use of the blood donation.
A look at the numbers: Around 3,000 blood donations are required in the NStob area every day, of which around 500 in Saxony-Anhalt and 350 in Thuringia. Overall, the daily need in Germany is around 15,000 blood donations, while the DRK blood donation services secure about 75 percent of blood supply, so ZDF today .
donations in summer: a call for action
The risk of a bottleneck in blood preparations increases over the summer months. Especially during the summer holidays, people's willingness drops to voluntarily donate blood. Antenn Thuringia reports that the daily need for various reasons, such as holiday and bridge days, threatens is.
The durability of thrombocytes is only four days, which increases the pressure on blood donation services. Companies such as the DRK blood donation service organize numerous campaigns to mobilize the population and promote a higher willingness to donate. The DRK app, which already has 1.5 million users, is highlighted as one of the measures in order to encourage younger generations to donate blood.
The change in willingness to donate
An interesting observation is that baby boomers, i.e. the generation born between 1946 and 1964, donate more often than younger people. While older age groups take their way to the donation up to three times a year, the younger ones are usually only twice a year. This development could be problematic in the long term, since the willingness to donate in the older years is also declining.
The reasons for this are varied: from personal health issues to an increasingly hectic lifestyle. Nevertheless, the DRK appeals to everyone who fulfills conditions (at least 50 kg heavy and healthy fit), not only to help others, but also to enrich your own life.
The World Blood Donation Day, which was launched by the WHO in 2004, will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year. It is an opportunity to become aware of the importance of the blood donation and a challenge to get involved in summer and beyond and maintain the blood donation.
