Bremer Kutterpullen: Who will be city champion in 2025? A competition of giants!

The anticipation for the big event of the year for Kutterpullen fans in Bremen is increasing: Next Saturday, September 6th, 2025, the 28th Bremen City Championship will be held in Kutterpullen on the Weser. The starting shot will be fired at 11 a.m. and spectators can look forward to exciting competitions that will last until the afternoon.

Organized by “Lokomotive Pusdorf and Followers”, the event has developed into a popular annual highlight since its founding 28 years ago. “We are expecting several hundred spectators,” says Eberhard Schneider, one of the organizers, looking forward to the event. A total of 13 Bremen teams have registered for the championship, three more than last year. This makes the competition particularly fierce and the event even more exciting.

A racing team full of tradition

Kutterpullen, a fascinating area of sea sports, attracts not only the participating teams, but also numerous enthusiastic spectators. Each cutter is steered by a crew consisting of ten people and a helmsman or helmswoman. “Both men’s and women’s teams are allowed, even mixed formations,” explains Schneider. The competition is divided into three-minute runs, between which the best crews fight for a place in the final.

A total of over 120 rowers are expected to compete in the 3-minute competition on identical naval cutters without sails. Spectators can follow the spectacle comfortably from the Osterdeichwiese near the art tunnel, where a tent village with various food and drink stands awaits visitors. The offer ranges from grilled sausages to non-alcoholic drinks and vegan dishes, all at “socially acceptable prices”.

A sporting spectacle between friends

The semi-finals begin at 3:30 p.m., followed by the grand final at 4:30 p.m. The awards ceremony will take place at 5:00 p.m., and the event invites all participants and spectators to celebrate together and appreciate the successes until 6:00 p.m. The Vegesacker Pull Bulls, who won the title last year, are the team to beat. But “Lokomotive Pusdorf”, which took second place in last year’s final, doesn’t want to admit defeat either.

The origins of the Kutterpullen go back to the early 1990s, when Eberhard Schneider and other people from Bremen took part in the famous November race at the Bremen University of Applied Sciences. As a result, the city championship has developed over the years and is very popular in the region. The event builds on a rich maritime tradition dating back to naval and merchant shipping training and offers both young and experienced athletes the opportunity to showcase their skills.

With permits for the use of the Weser as a race track and the event running smoothly, everything is ready for an unforgettable Kutterpullen weekend. So if you don't want to miss the chance for exciting competitions and a sociable atmosphere, you should take the time on Saturday and come to the Weser. The smell of grilled food, the anticipation of the rowers and the cheering spectators promise an event that you won't soon forget. Further information about the event can be found at lok-pusdorf.de and Weser-Kurier.
