On Sunday, October 5, 2025, Bremen will be the venue for the 20th SWB Marathon, an event that not only attracts running enthusiasts, but also puts the entire Hanseatic city in a festive mood. The marathon takes participants through well-known sights, including the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Roland, the historic town hall and the impressive Weser Stadium. The start times for the three competitions are as follows: The classic marathon over 42 km starts at 9.30 a.m., the AOK half marathon with 21 km starts at 11.30 a.m. and the Hirsch Run over 10 km starts at 9.55 a.m. For the littlest athletes, the AOK children's run takes place from 3:10 p.m., so the whole family can enjoy it.
Traffic situation and road closures
However, the preparations for the major event also bring with them restrictions. Numerous streets in Bremen city center will be closed, which is particularly a challenge for residents. The SWB Marathon website informs you that vehicles that do not comply with the event-related parking bans will be towed away. Residents can contact a dedicated hotline that will be available on Friday, Saturday and Sunday for questions about closures.
Changes to public transport are also expected during the event. Tram lines 2, 3 and 8 as well as bus lines 20, 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28 and 31 will be affected. Some stops will be canceled, which is why early information via BSAG or the timetable app is strongly recommended. Particular attention should be paid to the closed streets in the districts of Mitte, Peterswerder and Überseestadt; among other things, the strawberry bridge, Rembertiring and parts of Schwachhauser Heerstrasse will remain accessible.

If we look at the weather forecast, maximum temperatures of around 17 degrees are expected, but heavy showers are also possible. This means for all runners and spectators: an umbrella couldn't hurt!
