Massive traffic jams on the A1: Norderel Bridge will be checked until mid-September!

From today, September 2nd, 2025, drivers on the A1 towards Bremen must expect significant traffic delays at the Norderelb Bridge. The bridge inspection, which began in mid-August, is now entering the next round, with the southbound direction now being affected. Loud Time Until September 17th, vehicles will only have two lanes available instead of the usual three. Drivers have to be prepared for long traffic jams as Autobahn GmbH Nord warns of significant disruptions.

The Norderelb Bridge, which is crossed by around 136,000 vehicles every day, is 40 years old and is already showing signs of age. The current narrowing of the roadway is also a response to damage that requires a maximum speed of just 60 km/h. From September 19th there will be a complete closure of the A1 over the following weekend, which will further complicate the situation. The full closure will apply from Friday 10 p.m. to Sunday 5 a.m. between Billstedt and Nordwest. The reason for this is construction work by Deutsche Bahn on the Moorfleet tunnel NDR reported.

Detour and alternative routes

To avoid the traffic jam, it is recommended to use alternative routes. For the north direction you can take the A255 as well as the B75 and B5 to the Hamburg-Billstedt motorway exit. The southbound direction offers the route via the B5, B75 and A255 to the A1. These diversions could be an interesting way to shorten the travel time somewhat, even if it won't always be completely traffic-free.

Additional traffic information

In addition to the existing traffic jam problems, there is a further burden of construction work on the A25 between Geesthacht and Hamburg, especially in front of the Hamburg-Südost triangle, where the A25 meets the A1. There is only one lane available in each direction and the construction work is scheduled to be completed by the end of November. The situation is tense and it seems as if commuters have to be very patient, especially with the end of the holidays in Hamburg on Wednesday and in Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania next weekend.

For anyone who is interested in further details about traffic in Germany, the Federal Motor Transport Authority offers an annual survey entitled “Traffic in Numbers”. You can find more information about this in KBA. The current edition has been available since February 2025 and offers a comprehensive overview of all aspects of transport.
