Traffic chaos in Hamburg: Norderel Bridge causes massive disruptions!
The Norderel Bridge is particularly in the spotlight these days because extensive construction work is pending, which will not be without consequences for traffic on the A1. As the NDR reported, work on the bridge continued on September 2, 2025. From this point on, drivers traveling in the direction of Bremen will only be able to use two lanes instead of three, which will certainly affect the traffic situation in the coming weeks.
The traffic disruptions are expected until mid-September, with the A1 being completely closed for a whole weekend from September 19th. From Friday, September 19th, 10 p.m. to Monday, September 22nd, 5 a.m., the motorway will be closed due to construction work by Deutsche Bahn on the Moorfleet Tunnel.
Recommended detours
For anyone who is dependent on the Norderelb Bridge during this time, we recommend a detour via the A7 or B5 from Billstedt. Anyone coming from the north should take the A255, B75 and B5 to the HH-Billstedt junction. For travelers from the south it is also advisable to take the B5, B75 and A255 to the A1.
The bridge, which was built in the 1960s and rebuilt in the 1980s, is now 40 years old and is used by around 136,000 vehicles every day, 21% of which are heavy goods vehicles. The Autobahn.de also informs that the replacement of the transition structures on the bridge is pending to ensure safety on the busy route.
Outlook for the coming months
A look at the closure times already planned shows how things will continue: Further dates for repair work are planned, including from May 23rd to 26th, 2025, where a one-way lane closure and the replacement of the transition structures are scheduled. Such measures are necessary to avoid future traffic disruptions and to maintain the infrastructure that is crucial for connecting Hamburg to other regions.
There was a short positive highlight not long ago: The renovation work on Hamburg's Norderelb Bridge was completed early on Sunday, so that from 12 p.m. all three lanes in the direction of Lübeck and Berlin were available again, which is what the North Sea newspaper can be seen. This work only caused minor disruptions, which shows that careful planning and rapid implementation can definitely have a positive impact.
In the coming weeks, all road users will have to pay attention and find out about diversions in good time so that they can reach their destination as relaxed as possible when driving over the Norderel Bridge!
