Lesum's new dog groomer: Schicke Schnauze” has become a hit!

Nadine Gottschalk from Lesum has landed a real stroke of luck with her new shop “Schicke Schnauze” at Hindenburgstrasse 45. The 30-year-old has set up her own business as a dog groomer and offers a comprehensive range of care for four-legged friends. Their range of services extends from showering to shearing, trimming and detangling. “We pay particular attention to dogs that require regular care due to health reasons, such as Poodle crosses,” she explains.

For Gottschalk, the decision to become self-employed did not come out of the blue. After a positive experience in animal physiotherapy and studying sports science, which she combined with working in self-help and nutritional advice for a health insurance company, becoming self-employed was the next logical step for her. She gained valuable experience by opening her first salon in Farge-Rekum before finally moving to Lesum.

High demand and continued interest

Interest in their services is high. However, due to high demand, Gottschalk is currently no longer accepting new customers. “The dogs that come to me are a colorful mix of different breeds, from small to large four-legged friends,” says the dedicated hairdresser. For her little customers, she gently introduces the puppies to the sounds of treatment, because the first visit to the dog groomer is often an exciting experience for the animals.

The training to become a dog groomer, which she completed over several weekends, formed the basis for her current business. Well-trained dog groomers achieve the necessary know-how through practical training, which also includes knowledge of business registration, pricing and marketing. "The job is more than just dealing with animals. You need manual skills, you should be able to listen well and also have physical endurance," she says, describing the challenges you are confronted with.

The trend towards dog-friendly care

The demand for dog groomers has increased in recent years, not least because around 10.3 million dogs lived in households in Germany in 2021 - an increase of almost one million compared to 2018. Families agree that living with animals has a positive impact on children, with around 65% of households keeping a pet.

“Dog services are a growth market,” adds Gottschalk. Many dog groomers who have completed training set up their own salons or work in animal shelters and dog boarding kennels. What do you need for this? Confidence, self-confidence and above all the ability to sell yourself well. Further training is also essential – you don’t want to miss out on new techniques!

Gottschalk runs her business with heart and mind. Your dog head symbol and the inviting “Schicke Schnauze” lettering on the windows already whet your appetite for more information. If you're curious, you can find all the details and booking options on their website and Instagram profile. But will she be able to accept new dogs again in the future? We'll have to wait anxiously for that.

The world of dog care is multifaceted, and as Nadine Gottschalk impressively shows, she combines a passion with a new professional challenge. Even moving to Lesum couldn't change that. It remains to be seen how “Schicke Schnauze” will develop and whether Nadine Gottschalk might introduce capes for even more furry customers in the near future.
