Pizarro raves about Kane and looks ahead to the north-south classic!
Claudio Pizarro, who is considered a Bundesliga legend at the age of 46, still attracts everyone's attention. His enormous career, spanning more than 20 years and over 400 games, includes spectacular stints at Werder Bremen and FC Bayern Munich. He played 250 games for Werder and 224 for Bayern, where he not only supported goalscorers in their search for success, but also shone as captain of the Peruvian national team. For his services, he was made an honorary professor at the University in January Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas appointed, underlining his importance for Peruvian sport.
Pizarro is grateful for the award and emphasizes how important it is to support sport in Peru. In a recent interview, the former striker also shared his perspective on Harry Kane, the new star at Bayern. “I think he has the potential to surpass Robert Lewandowski's record of 41 goals in a season if he stays injury-free,” says Pizarro, expressing what many fans are thinking.
Werder Bremen and the current season
Werder Bremen are facing challenges this season that are showing zigzags in their form. Pizarro notes that Werder will have to be cautious defensively when they face Bayern to avoid being overrun. They recently bounced back in the league with a strong win against Mönchengladbach, only to lose to Freiburg. “A little more consistency and we could even qualify for a European competition,” he says optimistically.
A newcomer that offers hope is Victor Boniface, a physically strong striker who could invigorate the offense. Pizarro sees great potential in him and sees Borussia Dortmund as serious competition for Bayern in the Bundesliga.
A look at career highlights
Pizarro's career is marked by numerous highlights. Starting with his first Bundesliga goal in the 1999/2000 season, when he made an immediate impression in the game against Kaiserslautern. Most notable was his hat-trick in 1999 against Wolfsburg and his most productive season in 2000/01, which led to his move to Bayern. For those in the know: Pizarro scored countless times during his time at Bayern and set many records, including becoming the oldest Bundesliga player to score a hat-trick.
Another notable point in his career was his return to Werder Bremen, where he continued to shine as the record goalscorer and crowned his time in football with an emotional farewell game at the Weserstadion in 2022. He scored 20 goals in his 85 caps for Peru, making his Copa América debut in 2004.
As Pizarro notes, the football environment in Germany has now become one of the most important in the world. He believes this not only because of his memories, but also because of the influence that players like Harry Kane have on the game.
His career and experiences are an impressive example of how you can excel in football not only as a player, but also as a role model. The active support of sport in Peru is further strengthened by Pizarro's work as an honorary professor and can pave the way for future generations to create their own football legacy.
In the near future, the football world will be watching closely to see whether Werder Bremen can overcome the challenges and whether Harry Kane will continue the striker tradition that Pizarro played a key role in shaping.
