Stratospheric balloon of the Vegesack high school flies to the sun!
Vegesack, Bremen, Deutschland - On Thursday morning, the Vegesack grammar school presented an impressive spectacle in the sky of Vegesack. A white stratospheric balloon, which is designed for the observation of the sun, started at the schoolyard at 9:30 a.m. This is the continuation of a project that started with a weather balloon in 2023. Under the direction of math and physics teacher Michael Eberz, the students carefully prepared the balloon by filling it with helium and installing the technical equipment. The WESER-KURIER reports that short raindrops shortly before the starting at the students only increased.
At 9:40 a.m. the hose was then removed from the balloon while the parachute was held. Although the start was originally scheduled for 10 a.m., the students waited for a GPS signal. Finally, the balloon started under optimal conditions and could be followed by GPS. The expected maximum flight altitude was about 30 kilometers, but the balloon initially reached a height of 8 kilometers. Ultimately, he ended up in a corn field northeast of Itzehoe, which the group helped to find the balloon. At around 1 p.m. Eberz received an SMS with the location of the balloon, there was the possibility to secure and evaluate the collected data.
collaboration and technology
It is particularly exciting that the probe sent with the balloon with on-board computers and special sun sensors from the Institute for Aerospace Technology at the Bremen University. The Ganerben-Gymnasium , which also successfully launched a stratospheric balloon on October 10, 2023, how important practical experience is in science and technology. There the school community gathered on the Nagelsberg sports field to observe the start, and the rescue of the measuring devices in Styria was carried out by young scientists. These experiences caused a stir both regionally and nationally.
The project of the Vegesack grammar school is part of an initiative of the German Center for Aerospace (DLR) , in a total of 20 schools in Germany. The aim of these balloon starts is to observe the earth from heights of up to 35 kilometers and to explore the atmosphere. The data and images collected are documented and are to be published in autumn what the students can expect, the exciting equivalence of theory and practice. With such projects, the idea of cooperation in education is further strengthened, while the students have the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes of scientific research.
