A tragic accident occurred on Tuesday morning, August 26, 2025, at around 7:25 a.m. at a restricted level crossing in Bremen-Burglesum. A driver was hit by a passenger train and died at the scene of the accident. Fortunately, around 150 passengers on the train were uninjured, but had to expect considerable delays and partial cancellations on the route between Bremen-Burg and Bremen-Oslebshausen as Deutsche Bahn immediately closed the route. Replacement buses are now running between Osterholz-Scharmbeck and Bremen main station to support travelers.
The exact circumstances of the accident are still unclear. The police, federal police and fire brigade are on site with many emergency services. The incident is unfortunately reminiscent of a similar tragic accident in Bad Zwischenahn, Lower Saxony, where a 12-year-old boy and his 49-year-old father recently died in a collision with a regional express. The train had pushed the car along several hundred meters of track, while the barrier at the level crossing was closed at the time of the accident and the driver got out while the car rolled. Here, too, over 200 train passengers were affected, and emergency pastoral teams took care of the evacuation of the passengers, who were cared for in the nearby fire station.
Safety measures and railway crossings
In order to avoid such accidents in the future, it is important to focus on safety measures at level crossings.
