Art meets identity: Le Sel Noir in Bremen from August 17th
Something is happening in the artistic field in Bremen: The Städtische Galerie will open its doors on August 17th for the eagerly awaited exhibition “Le Sel Noir”. Curated by Alejandro Perdomo Daniels, the focus is on influential positions by black artists. The exhibition will be on view until October 19th and is not only a feast for the eyes, but also a place for reflection on topics such as identity and the critical examination of social conditions. The entry? Completely free!
What can visitors expect? A look at the works of a total of ten artists who deal with emancipation processes in different ways. Particularly noteworthy is the work by Ngozi Ajah Schommers, which shows a dry tree that is called “Lady” in Nigeria. This tree, standing directly on the beach from which slave ships once departed, is a powerful symbol of the history explored in these artists' works.
Artistic discussions and inspiration
The title “Le Sel Noir” comes from a cycle of poems by the famous author Édouard Glissant and gives the exhibition a poetic framework. Unlike many others, which are often political and agitational, this show takes an artistic and aesthetic approach. Lisa Marie Asubonteng presents an impressive photo cycle with self-portraits on the beach, while Usha Seejarim draws attention to the issue of domestic violence with her sculpture “Deep Wound,” which is made from wooden clothespins.
The exhibition also features a remarkable installation by Nástio Mosquito entitled “Strange Fruit Triptych,” which addresses the civil war in Angola. In her work, Sonia E. Barrett criticizes the colonial demarcations by working with shredded maps. If you want to open your eyes to contemporary art, you definitely shouldn't miss Mónica de Miranda's photo and video work “Transplantation” in the Lisbon Botanical Garden.
Opening ceremony and guided tours
The opening of the exhibition will take place on August 16th at 7 p.m., followed by a guided tour the following day at 12 p.m., where some of the artists will be present. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more directly from the artists about their inspiration and the background to their works.
A visit to the Städtische Galerie Bremen is definitely worth it for all art and culture lovers. The smiles on the faces of the artists who stand up for their messages will certainly spread to the visitors. Keep this period free in your calendar and allow yourself to be touched by the powerful works!
